This is the first time I've heard about this, but Microsoft is releasing this console you plug into your TV and it connects to a computer owned by microsoft and that run the games you play for you. Its basically games on demand

http://www.gamespot.com/special_feature/onlive-microconsole/image-feature/index.html?image=1

This seems kinda interesting on one hand, and too different for comfort on the other. It could be the 'last' console in the sense that MS keeps upgrading the hardware that you connect to, you yourself will never need a new console. So for once in history, consoles get beter over time! Then ofcourse, it begs some questions; like what of lag, fees, how much will games cost, and a few others. I'm not gonna bite, but what do you guys think?

That sounds like the only console I'd ever buy. But I still dislike consoles.

If I can play games for free, then I want to play them multiplayer with a friend.

I'll still stick with PC. Whenever microsoft gets a good idea they charge just enough money to make it not worth it

If it works then I guess its an excellent idea, although I prefer owning games physically.

I'm always a bit cautious of cloud computing in general, and games are no different.
Having a box of game is a lot better than relying on Microsoft to supply it each time you want to play.

There's also the question of how DRM is enforced in this format, but that may not be a big issue.

This. I would really love a single console that can be upgraded instead of buying a completely new one over time.

Are you sure Microsoft's working on this? It doesn't say in the article and the bits I've heard about this before haven't said.
That aside, I can't see this taking off in the next few years because, looking at the bottlenecks for modern computers, bandwidth is the main issue in a situation like this. Expecting millions of gamers to stream 1080p is ridiculous. Uncompressed you're talking about 118MB/s (1920x1080x60Hz) although I'd imagine they don't hit that. Still, even at 500kB/s for one hour of gaming is 1.8GB. Multiply that by 1 million users and you're talking about 1800TB of data an hour. For comparison, about four years ago YouTube used between 25-200TB a day. I doubt the internet could take such a strain like that, really. The tubes would be pretty clogged.

It claims all you need is a 3-5MB/s connection, and it runs the games at 720p.

I *think* its microsoft, its called OnLive, but i guess that doesn't mean anything.

Question: If you buy all these games, and 1 year later, the system or company goes to all hell (money, legal, schemes), will you care that you can't play your $500 collection of games?
Also to think of, onlive server downtime? game downtime?

Sounds like a console version of Steam.

OnLive has been in the works for a few years now & isn't a Microsoft product.

So far it hasn't fallen apart, even tho as mention the bandwidth needed is huge. AFAIK the system wasn't that hard to come up with but then they needed to spend over a year setting up enough servers farms to run the whole thing.

An assload of fail indeed, but it is nowhere near in weight or diameter the size of Gabe Newell's ass.

What Carno does not know is that the Gabe Newell's ass itself is integrated with STEAM servers, simply because they could not find an area large enough to place them.

Sums them all up,

Ive see a few of these ideas being passed around and afew companys boast about prototypes of these cloud gaming things including some pc "Steam with out the downloading" idea.
More DRM, less rights, more chance of down time and more customers being shafted.
(ultimatly for the price of a controler you are also going to need to pay for the pc behind it)

If you could get this shit for home use, ie your gaming computer could do all the work and send the data to say a netbook i would be hopeful but it looks like a locked down Console is favoured by the big companys

if console can upgrade then how different from pc game? only reason i found is every developer need to pay money for MS if they want to maker game for that machine. that make only MS have benefit from this. and if reason is for counter pirate software i don't think this machine can change anything.

Well the difference here is that you'll never need to upgrade the hardware. As long as this service is online you'll be able to play anything with any system requirements. Thats why DaFool named the topic "final gen" because the games can forever be improved without the need for a new line of consoles or computer upgrade.

And since this machine uses USB ports it should be possible to use mice/keyboards, making RTS games perfectly viable.

Then we are back at a PC if you can use a keyboard and mouse on a console. Also, where do you want to leave the keyboard and the mouse? I mean, normally when someone plays on a console he doesn't play it behind a desk #Tongue

If you read my post you'd realise this has the advantage of never needing a hardware upgrade. That's its potential advantage over the PC.

You complained about the difficulties of playing RTS on this system and I said if it's a problem you can play with a keyboard and mouse, just like TD/RA1/D2k on the PS1. Its up to you how you set it up. Actually if you go on the website you can use the software on your computer as well.

If you dont want it cos your moaning about playing RTS then don't get it. Not a problem. I'm not getting it because my internet sucks, otherwise it's a great idea with infinite potential.

Can't play my latest games cos my graphics card fried. If this had been out a couple of years ago I wouldn't have that problem.

This system will not come cheap, will have possibilities of delayed connection which could result in lag, a failure in maintenance could lead to a whole load of failure.

There are so many problems that could arise from this, but it's an awesome idea if they could pull it off with all of the required company-side maintenance.
This solution to gaming can only be for...well, those who can't afford/handle/building a gaming rig, otherwise this is a great idea.

Though to be perfectly honest, PC will always be the best gaming solution ever.

I'm a tad bit skeptical of the hardware updating. Because regardless of internet, you will still need better graphics cards and processors unless they want to include a 512 core video processor. And well, thats just ridiculous. UNLESS they've figured out an efficient way to process over broadband, the same broadband that is still very very slow in most places.

And the final console won't be one such as this. It will be in our brains! #Tongue

The only game sucks, and they still didn't patch the respawns.

And not to mention, the shitty market economy, I mean come on, a replenish-able item cost alot already ! And high-tier items are even more expensive!

If you don't like the game stop playing. It's not worth the subscription.
