hifi, the person behind the CnCNet v2, has released CnC-DDraw, a reimplementation of the old DirectDraw API which can use OpenGL.

This not only allows you to play C&C95 and RA95 in a window, but contains options to stretch it to any size you want! It also fixes freezing and fast scrolling issues, and makes the game run better in WINE. In addition it has mouse adjustment and FPS limitation options.

There is a chance that it solves the multi-core CPU freeze bug some people have.

With all this support how can more people not be playing these games?

Amazing stuff.

I have this problem were I cant interact with the game... It also looks like its some odd offset with the cursor... if I move the cursor away from the game window there is some thing like a shadow cursor that follows it.

I uploaded a picture of what it looks like, however only one cursor shows... so the red circle would were the cursor is active...

MadHQ: You're using v2.00. At the moment I posted this, only v3.03 was supported. Though apparently, the new update hifi made just moments ago does add support for all other versions, since it fixes the game's mouse code dynamically rather than hacking specific addresses that call it.

Either way, an game update is advised Razz

On a related note, I'm working on an advanced setup tool for C&C95 v1.06c that'll incorporate both ddraw and game settings. (The ini reading & writing already work perfectly; next is the setup's translation system Smile )

Will this by any chance fix display problems on windows 7?
(for some reason on my computer the games behave like their palettes has been scrambled...)

This is really cool. Kudos, hifi!

I'm also using 2.00 and now it's working. No more screwed up colors in Windows 7.

@Nyerguds - That fixed it thanks! Smile

You guys should find a way to get RA2/YR to run in windowed mode.

  1. Change screen pixel depth to 16 bit
  2. Open command prompt (alternatively create a shortcut to gamemd.exe or whatever)
  3. Type the path of the exe
    Code:
    example:
    C:\Westwood\RA2\gamemd.exe

  4. After that, type this on the end of the file path, -WIN
  5. Finally would look like this:
    C:\Westwood\RA2\gamemd.exe -WIN

And that's window mode.

It works well otherwise, but every time I launch C&C95 or RA95 it messes up my Logitech SetPoint mouse sensivity settings so I have to restart SetPoint to get it fixed. I've tried both adjouse=true and false, it doesn't change anything.

Is that made only for C&C and RA 95 (games-specific changes),or is it open enough to evolve into something compatible with TS (wonder if it would need to be merged with a waveclass patch,or if going into opengl would fix the thing from the start)?

TS already has a window mode and this is seperate form any .exe patch, it is a extra .dll file you put in the game folder, so no i dont think it could merged with the wave class fix.

Hm... for some reason now I can't play the Aftermath/Counterstrike missions, but the units are still available in multiplayer...

This is the best news I have read here for quite a while, awesome! I'm definitely trying this later. As for that DirectDraw re-implementation, shouldn't that work for any old DirectX game and therefore solve one of the biggest problems with old games in general? Smile

After you've mentioned it, i had to try it with starcraft.
At first it didn't look bad. The menu loaded in a window and the mouse moved around. But once i clicked into the window, the mouse got stuck in the centre, which made it impossible to start a game (or at least i don't know the keyboard shortcuts to do this with keyboard only) and only could exit the game again by pressing esc.

Well, it was never made for SC. The dll overrides some mouse position calls (from user32.dll IIRC) to make them relative to the window corner. It normally jumps to the middle at the moment you release the mouse (by alt-tabbing out, or just pressing the inbuilt mouse release combination [ctrl]+[tab]). Just clicking inside the window area should give you mouse control again.

If it doesn't, I guess SC doesn't use the mouse calls in the same way C&C does, making the system not work as expected.

btw, update your SC. Latest version is 1.161 #Tongue

LKO, you should use DxWnd for Starcraft, works really well.

I've modified mine, so the unit-limit isn't that strong anymore (beside some other changes like new weapons for units etc) and i'm not sure if a patch would undo all these changes.
In addition did i never play SC online and i also haven't played it for several years now.

And since it runs without any crashes or bugs i don't see the need in updating it. Wink

@Hyper: Thanks for the hint. Smile

RA2 in windowed mode... Uh, can you get the installers to run in windowed mode?
