I was under the impression that you needed a WWSkin if you intended to use scaling in your animation. Apparently I was wrong, I have a sphere that is part of a skinned building and while the bone is correctly animated in Max, in W3X view, the animation plays with no scaling.

Is scaling possible to capture for an animation?

No it is not as only the pivot is saved for a bone and you can't scale a pivot.
