Well there's absolutely no reason to use RockPatch anymore, that was replaced with NPatch a good few years ago now and so is overall buggier and has less features.

NPatch (especially with NPatchExt) could still be useful however you're ultimately limiting yourself as Ares is constantly being improved with some awesome new additions and even better stuff on the way. And of course, because it's open source and uses the Syringe DLL injection program it is infinitely expandable.

Although NPatch provides some cool features and is still used by mods which were originally built on it, Ares is IMO the way forward. Of course I'd also keep my eye on the new Gear Zero engine hack, which has some potential although a long way to go.

---

There's my reasonable answer. I'd suggest mastering the original engine before using any of these expansions though, as they are often advised for advanced users only and there's still plenty you can do in original YR with some neat trickery.

I prefer nice clean keys over messy trickery though :p

Use Ares then. #Tongue Just don't let it limit your creativity.

I don't mod RA2. But if I would, I'd probably be making my own dlls for Ares. How is that limiting creativity? It's just the next step in workarounds to accomplish cool stuff. You're talking to the guy who added ini-controlled music adding in C&C95, you know #Tongue

Not to mention, for everything Ares adds, it's still perfectly possible to use the old messy workarounds. After all, with Ares you can perfectly choose what you let the system change/fix/upgrade and which parts you want to leave as they were.

Not entirely true. I know for certain that Ares applies a fix to factory queuing which breaks the mismatching owners/'kennel hack' workaround used by some people to force certain units to pop up from different factories. Not sure if there are any other examples, but you get the point. You do not really get to choose whether or not to use that one specific bugfix for example. Maybe you have the freedom of choice with some of the features, but certainly not with all of them.

Technically, you could modify the injection text file to remove the hook that changes whichever chunk 'broke' the kennel hack.

Personally I didn't find any problems with NPatch. But, with the introduction of ARES I changed over. ARES will only get better so I would say go with that.

NPSE is quite stable. Currently, the only critical bug found is that modifying any new lightning storm super weapon in a map file will lead to Internal Errors. Omitting Report= on the Primary weapon of an EMPulseCannon=yes building will also lead to IEs when that building's SuperWeapon=(with Type=EMPulse or Type=FireAt) is fired, however this bug used to exist in original codes, VK simply didn't fix it.

I can't say much about NPAE since it always crashes for no obvious reasons. For example, an Aircraft Carrier with SpawnsNumber=6 works in NPSE but will cause crashes in NPAE. I have ever traced the program but soon got tired of VK's carelessness. That's why I stopped working on NP, to make my own patch.

Well I wasn't specifically referring to you, just anyone who happened to read the post. #Tongue You know what you're doing with TD and have been doing so for a long time, I'd expect you to move into more complex stuff... this guy might not be an experienced modder and IMO it's better to start with the basics and push boundaries than get handed easy extra options and rely on those.

Also since you can't really mod TD, exe hacking is the only thing you can do. #Tongue If this guy starts developing his own DLLs to add his own logics then that'll be the awesome.

Psh, can't really mod TD? You just wait till I finish my rules system #Tongue

And that's exactly what I meant.

I started to finish my mod a few month ago and ask myself the same question. I decided to use Ares and I still don't regret it.

Very good features, good support, well documented and still in development. It's also pretty stable. I got some ares-related IEs, but those have been fixed quite fast.

Thumbs up for Ares!

About Ares support. If you're in good timezone, you may get instant support with using RenProj IRC. If not, I'm sure you'll get a response within 24 hours by opening a topic on RenProj. If you open that topic here... then I don't know.

But yeah, Ares has as active support crew which isn't composed of only one or two people.
