I have been working on this scene for a while. I am aware it is lacking in detail in some places. I will continue trudging on. I'd like opinions on the work I have done thus far, however. Below is a small backstory as to the scene's existance.

Quote:
This scene (will soon) depict the Multi-Purpose Transport (MPT-145) "Endeavor" Class Marine Dropship dropping off supplies at USMC Supply Base Sojourner in the northwestern section of Dallas. While the area itself is of no military value, the base is just off old Interstate 35, which runs due north into a heavily contested portion of land. The enemy ground forces are attempting to occupy the city of Lewisville and the Lewisville lake Hydroelectric Dam. As depicted here, a bombing run destroyed one of the Dropships.

I plan on adding a city in the background, and more structures in the base. Right now, only the command center and (undetailed) landing pads are present. I'm thinking a receiving station for supplies, a barracks, and probably a motorpool of some sort.

Also, I need help setting up a proper sky light...

Totally needs a ladder ramp thing to get to the cockpit. And some junk around the engine of the damaged? one. Great job so far.

I will in time. Right now I'm working on 3 primary areas of focus:

    * 1.) More structures around the the base, and adding misc. details to them (such as pipes, windows, ect).
    * 2.) Environment. Environment. Environment. Little tidbits. Some trucks running around. Some people helping unload. Background city.
    * 3.) Lighting. I'm 'acquiring' Vray 2.0, so I can set up my sky lighting. I'm also going to do a mid-day and night version. So there will be lots of lights. I fully intend and believe my render time for a 1920x1080px image to be around 20-25 minutes with my GTX 460.

Why not try using Mr_sky with Mentalray daylightning renderer using Mr_Photographic exposure control.

Before you set up. Set mental ray with daylightning as your renderer first.
Then set up the lightning+finalgather, global illumination, etc.

By the way I thought Automatic Exposure control wasn't supported by Mental Ray IIRC, is that why your render is looking weird?

EDIT: nevermind, you're using V-ray, thats beyond my scope. #Tongue

My mind is blown, It took that long to render that previous image you've posted? O_o Personally, I see why not mess around with mental ray when you can get pretty much the sames results as V-ray.

From what I saw from your previous render, It looks like you try to render a scene with a viewport background image.
If I was doing a render with a Raster background image, I'd rather render the model alone, save image with alpha channel and do all the composites in Photoshop to save time.

It didn't took me long to render this using Mentalray at draft quality settings. at 15 minutes roughly, my hardware specs are worse than yours #Tongue, besides, I was learning scene lightning too a few weeks ago...

If you properly setup a scene within VRay your render times won't be bad.

Mental Ray, VRay, whatever it is you have to know what you are working with to achieve the best image with good render times. It's about finding that balance.

That sucks for a draft.

Properly build up your scene, lay down your textures and shaders, and then worry about serious lighting composition.

Keep things within their limits, don't waste memory on pointless things, render in passes, properly setup shaders, and so on.

Yeah I was mostly experimenting with Photometric lightning than focusing on background when playing around with mental ray for the first time. Nothing is final in that hangar render. #Tongue
