I made a building with proper lights that cast shadows. Is it a matter of rendering the image with no shadows, make that frame image 1 then turn on shadows render image and make that the corresponding image to 1?

There are two methods of extracting shadows into seperate frames, method one is use the Ra2 Rendering script, not optional since AA is off by default.

the second way is the most accurate
Render your building with shadows off >
Then in another render with shadows on, give your building the following material:
type: matte/shadow.
Check "Opaque alpha"
Radio button on "At Object depth"

This way you will have any rate of AA to your desire.

Remember that your building must have this material applied to all of it's parts.

Use a batch rename tool (irfan view for example) to put your shadow frames after your normal frames.

This works, so I get a cookie Very Happy

What's long and difficult?, you just render it twice, full effect, no need for photo-shopping pic by pic.

your method surely means to extract the shadow with the magic wand tool, let's say you were making an anim with 30 frames, go on and waste your time picking shadows off.

man, all you have to do is render the first image with the shadows on, but make your shadow plane not accept shadows by going to object properties and unticking "ReceiveShadows". Then in second image turn back on "ReceiveShadows" on the plane, Then highlight everything except the plane, right click mouse, go to object properties and untick "Visible To Camera", It will now render just the shadow.
This process also works with multi frame animations made in Max too.

Thanks Cranium. I have been looking on the net for something. Unfortunately, the book I have for 3d max doesn't cover C&C. What's it up to now? I owe you a case of beer?

BTW: I make 1 frame at a time. It allows me to check for any inconsistency in my work.

One frame at a time, are you insane? That would take ages. Thats like saying, "I'm going to render this million poly scene with only one core so I can check for rendering issues."

Also bizzaro-Maverick, you forgot to mention that you turn AA on when you render the building and turn it off when you render the shadows. And there wouldn't be a need to batch rename cause:
A) 3DSMAX9+ have an option to start numbering at a specific # when you render.

Cranium's is the easiest way tbh.

B) You could duplicate all the building frames, add them to the end, and render shadows with the second set.
