Subject description: How do I get rid of my lazyness
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Recently I've lost my magic and became rather lazy, am wondering what you 3d modelers do when you get lazy like this, like what gets you back in shape and ready to go.

I've also been lurking in the spotlight sections of both .shp and .vxl files, and I'd like to know what sort of stuff is required the most to reach a good quality model.

I'd also like to gather a team of moders/modelers or work with an existing team, how do I do that?.

Just getting someone to mention it is pretty rare so that's why there aren't many collabs around. When I worked in a group it feels great knowing that someone else is also responsible :3

Teams are really rare and it takes years to have a decent team. Others even end up alone, so really, a one man mod is quite usual.

Yeah, most of the problems are conflicts in mod ideals.

Simply creativity. Having the knowledge is useless unless you can put it to good use.

Wut? you lost your mojo already? Well that was fast. But all of us modders need a rest once in a while. But if your bored with it already, your gonna have a real tough time making a mod. There has been many a mod that have failed due to this. I really dont know what to tell ya on how to keep the spark alive, but I'm drivin by the fact that I WANT this mod finished, no matter how long it takes, and I've already done soooo much with my mod theres no way I'm quitting with it now. But even I have periods when I get bored and tired and mostly it's been lack of time. but never gone from it too long. Just push yourself into finishing it, otherwise it will end up like many mods, dead and over!

Usually if you lack internal motivation, external ones can make you happier.

Get a beta tester or two, those will motivate you.

Am not modding at all, am just modeling, all I've been doing is random extrusions and a lot of useless smoothing.

For example I sketched up a mech unit that's supposed to be my MCV, and it turned out to be a mechanical ant (only the head).

Need motivation? How's your first ShockBot? Add a deathanim to it.

After that you can do like... hm.... Spetnaz, a female commando with a machinegun... I have some ideas, too. #Tongue

Go back to what first inspired you to start in the first place. Think of a storyline. The hardest part of a mod is creating the buildings, vehicles and the troops, since they are the most time consuming. Then work from there.

I wouldn't think too much about a storyline TBH as that's almost useless for a YR mod. Instead, if you want to work on your own mod, build a great background with unique and interesting factions which could easily come across in the artwork. Make sure whatever you create is fun and not self-limiting.

Remember also that you don't even particularly need background. You could have a unique and interesting gameplay idea and run with that, perhaps even only making one playable faction which can then expand and become unique ingame.

That was one of the ideas behind my dead mod Powerslave (dead due to lack of graphics etc). #Tongue

If I'm bored of modelling, I'll do something else for my mod. If the whole mod bores me, I switch to something else. For instance, I haven't done anything on my mod this week, but I did finish STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, and worked on a TW map (the first one in ages) #Tongue

What I usually do is work on something else till I get bored. Then move on again and again and again. In the end I end up back at modding/coding and I do it again and again. A bit of a never ending cycle. I work on CnCFansite one day and move onto coding Minecraft mod the next.

I can also help you code if you want. I am getting bored with BCD's code again.

I mentioned storyline to try to focus on what to make. It might give him a direction to go. If he can figure where he wants to go, then the next step is figure out what each side should be armed with and he would create the troops to invade or repel with.

Just noticed something.

When you did that Shock bot, you said that you used first a palette which didn't have the first 16 colors.

Interestingly, your best renders were came out with that broken palette.

You should do a new infantry, with the following in mind:
- Original frames should be rendered with the first settings you used at the Shock Bot (not the RA1 Shock Trooper). Shadow frames should be rendered with your second Bot settings.

Yeah, I know I got out of the loop recently, but I still think this possible.

I usually jump from project to project. Some, like TI and TO, have generally the same concept (and game). GDI vs Nod, Tiberian atmosphere.

When I get bored of those two, I work on my own projects. Echilon: The War for Terra Nova is my latest, and It's going pretty good. 3 very unique and different factions for YR. I find fun in trying to figure out how to diversify them. Smile
