I just heard word about "Point cloud technology" which uses 'atoms' instead of polygons, a technology previously used for medical imaging.
One particular company boasts they can put in unlimited detail without worrying about strict polygon counts.

I can only assume that other companies will be jumping on board real quick, we could be looking at the next generation and future of 3D imaging.

There's some serious shadow clipping when rendering the lights in real time.

Also I'd like to see these 'points' rigged and animated properly.

In addition consider the collision calculations if used in a game. Per point collision with other points would be immense.

They don't really address many factors of games which makes me skeptical of this amount of "unlimited" detail. It's interesting, but I'd rather just see more strides being taken in polygonal engines (which is always happening).

Plus, when I play a game I don't run up to a pile of rocks and zoom in on them. I usually play the game. #Tongue

Start playing loot 'em ups, like Fallout, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro.

I look A LOT at the ground when gaming.

Yeah, played them all; Metro is the most appealing of the engines and is a FPS anyway though.

My point is having an immaculate amount of detail isn't really all that important. Obviously you want a nice looking game, but polygonal engines have progressed so far (and will continue to progress) that current games being developed are looking absolutely stunning.

I want to see all of the technical issues properly addressed for this "unlimited data" before thinking "Its the end of the polys as we know it".

I agree with Joshy - the complexity of using such technology means that the processing power would need to be immense, which in turn makes it completely unsuitable for use as a game engine.
Especially with all the tricks used to keep the requirements down on current gen games.

Notch (of Minecraft fame) also posted an interesting entry on this subject, which basically derided this as a hoax.

Notch? The guy who can't even optimize his own coding to make the game run faster?

I don't think Notch has any room to be knocking someone else's project, not to say his is bad.

At any rate, I saw this a couple weeks back and it looks promising in many aspects, and even if it does fall flat on its' face, it still provides a lot to learn from.

If nothing else, I'm sure they could find a way to hybrid polys with this new atom stuff In particular, it should def make for better smoke, effects, and grass/plants than polys or sprites can make

His maths on it is accurate, and sums up the shear amount of information which has to be turned into visuals every frame. Whether or not he can optimise his game is of no consequence when the discussion is entirely on the theoretically feasibility of the technology.

This company has been about for a while doing this. They posted a video of it in 2003 as well, essentially the whole thing is vapourware.

Somehow I doubt a company that has spent almost, if not over a decade working on a project for it not to work somehow. They're either very good trolls, or there's some feasibility behind it all.

This subject already looked familiar to me, but now I know where I read about this before: on Notch's blog.

Do you honestly believe that your home computer could possibly draw unlimited detail?

If they've been working on it for ten years, why has it not been incorporated into anything yet? There were fully voxel games back in the 90's, but I haven't seen anything similar being done any more recently. What are the odds that a technology which has been being tested and refined for ten years would not be incorporated into any game?

There's a third possibility in the Trolling vs. Real stakes, you know. Maybe they're looking for funding to bring the technology forward - maybe they've only got it working enough for prescripted demos.

It could... if consoles weren't keeping tech back.

With the right software, why not?

Like I said, they're either good trolls, or there's some feasibility behind it all.

Its a voxel engine

Its being done elsewhere such as
http://www.atomontage.com/

however they arent claiming to be something they are not. I've heard people say its an investment scam but I dont know enough to really take an opinion on that.

It does however seem over hyped for what it is (not what it claims).
