It has probably been out for awhile, but I found this article published today and went ballistic! Score one for science. One down, two to go. _________________ You come for the modding but you stay for the Crap Forum. QUICK_EDIT
Wake me up when they cure something more diabolical like AIDS, or at least find a usable treatment for rabies. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa

AIDS/HIV will one day be cured, but it will take time. For now, we should be happy that we are slowly eradicating other diseases from the planet. Even if they're not saving lives as a cure for HIV would, they're still improving the quality of life for millions. _________________

I guess that those two to go, are actually HIV and cancer.
Well in the case of cancer the use of specific small interference RNA (siRNA) sequences has been shown to stop tumor metastasis with good success. There are several publications about it as an example.
Most of them use cells with transfected silencing genes. However, in the last biochemistry congress I attended to, we were shown some data about a drug also based on siRNA that works on mice with no ill effects on healthy cells, yet the results haven't been published yet AFAIK.
Even if this approach won't kill the tumor it stops the most dangerous part of cancer, allowing surgery and radio/chemotherapy a higher degree of success. QUICK_EDIT
Cancer yes. Although the outlook for cancer patients is extremely high in comparison to HIV/AIDS patients. However, most positive prognosis comes from early detection and screening. I am under the assumption that this new HEP-C treatment can be used at any state of the infection, though it doesn't specifically say it. Even HIV/AIDS is treatable in its early stages through rigorous anti-viral treatment programs. _________________ You come for the modding but you stay for the Crap Forum. QUICK_EDIT

Yeah cancer can be easily stopped if detected early, however the most lethal cancer, colon cancer is almost completely silent until it has already metastasised making it almost incurable. But anyway that research is a HUGE step on fighting cancer since it's not toxic at all, after all it's just chains of bases which your body can degrade and metabolize, and it also seems to work against several types of cancer.
Anyway I was just trying to show another new relevant advancement on medical science.

I forgot about this, a classmate showed me this and we were laughing for quite some time. You see calling cancer a disease is kinda wrong, it's more like a symptom of one of many combinations of genetic mutations that affect cell cycle.
Cancer can be induced by silencing or overexpressing genes that regulate cell proliferation, which can be done naturally easily, as all it takes is a single random mutation in a strand of DNA of just one cell and some bad luck.
If you want something that actually cures cancer and is readily available, there's dichloroacetic acid which works, but it's also a neurotoxic, which BTW is also an issue with B17, which also has not conclusive evidence to actually work. Well at least the speculation about it is more serious than the cancer weevils (coleotherapy), which IMO is even more lol-worthy since the beetle used is not even a weevil.
On a side note, in relation to vitamins and cancer, try to not consume vitamin C in combination with foods rich in iron (like red meat). Even though vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, which are helpful with dealing with free radicals, a mayor source of DNA damage and so genetic mutations.
In combination with ferric ions (iron found in foods) it triggers a catalytic reaction forming ferrous ion producing several reactive oxygen species (oxygen free radicals), this defeats the purpose of consuming vitamin C. If you want to look more into it, this effect is explained by the Fenton and Haber-Weiss reactions. QUICK_EDIT
The problem with curing cancer is that 'cancer' isn't one disease, rather a whole set of diseases with similar pathology.
Curing specific cancers, however, is a neat trick (and has been accomplished for some specific varieties). QUICK_EDIT
