SSD, help meh!
So I bought this Intel 80 gig SSD, but the software won't clone anything off my HDD unless there's less than 80 gigs to clone it.
This means I've either got to find a place to put 500 gigs worth of crap, which is theoretically possible if I can borrow my buddy's 1TB external HD.. but this would mean uninstalling everything, and meticulously taking my flies apart piece by piece until I have only 80 gigs left.
s there a better way to do this? is there a program that can either detect my OS and automatically put it on the SSD, or let me select which flies I want to put on it?
Install OS onto your new SSD.
and if you can have them both connected at the same time, then do so, using the HDD as a bitch drive, and the SSD only to host your OS. QUICK_EDIT
^ What he said. Install OS to SSD, slave other drive and go. However, I'd find a place to store the files you need to keep, format your old drive to clean it up then put your old files back. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa

Cleaning up your old drive is something you should definitely do. Helps clean out any unwanted crap, maybe any hidden virus's, that sorta thing. Gives it that.. Fresh start. :] QUICK_EDIT
If his old drive has an OS still on it, that's basically just wasting space that can be used for storage. A nice full format is good for clearing any file system issues that may be present as well. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa

Exactly. It's only dependent if he can mount two Storage Devices. Most laptops and desktops can, so, that's just up for toss.
If he can't though, that would suck major, as I only look to SSD's for putting my OS and any other.. programs that have a lot of files to load up. QUICK_EDIT

This is what I did, but I regret not getting a larger sized SSD. I only got a 32GB and it's working for now but I've had to move everything from there and constantly clear certain Microsoft bullshit that stacks up fast. I learned I can move the folder in AppData to a new drive so I've done that with Roaming, but need to do the same with Local/LocalLow. Be nice to keep that space free for Windows Updates and whatnot. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa

I'm currently using a SSD/HDD Hybrid drive. Stores commonly used files [such as OS files and other programs that start-up all the time] to a SSD portion, everything else is on the HDD.
Pretty decent, better than my old HDD. But i have my old HDD still in the laptop, partitioned, in half, one for back-ups, and one for other crap I keep off the HDD/SSD. QUICK_EDIT

OK, so could you get a bit more specific on how to install my OS on this SSD? I'd like to think it's as simple as plugging it into my mobo with a Vista 64 install disc, but I'm not about to just jump in and wing it.
Any helpful advice on running my games off of the SSD is also appreciated.
Link to a trusted tutorial or two, or maybe any recommended programs would be hot. _________________ The Fall of Hammerfest - Epic Tiberian chain story

Oh. Vista. You might want to consider upgrading to Windows 7 since it's the one of the OSes that natively supports solid state drives. Vista will install properly and partition align correctly like 7. However, you will NEED to disable certain things inside of Windows Vista to optimize your OS to get the most of your drive (this is detailed here and here).
Secondly, I recommend moving as much off of your SSD as possible, but this really depends upon size more than much else. An 80GB drive should be enough to suffice leaving your AppData folders on it, but I would recommend larger applications and games be installed to separate drives. See below for a bit more on this topic.

You can do this, but I don't recommend it since your space is far more limited on your SSD and you want to minimize your writes as much as possible. If you burn up your write cycles, your drive is toast. Not even an SSD has an unlimited lifespan (traditional platter drives don't either, but can easily outlast an SSD). _________________ Discord: princess_marisa

Aight I know 7 is better for SSDs, but I don't want to plop another wad if all I have to to do Vista is click a few buttons. I just installed Vista onto the SSD and my HDD is listed in My Computer.
So how do I get the programs and stuff from my HDD to act as if they were on the same drive? nothing on the HDD is loading up since it's not the "primary drive" _________________ The Fall of Hammerfest - Epic Tiberian chain story

Might want to format the drive so it's clean. I have an SSD as primary and most of my apps run on secondary drives so I know it works, but this is Windows 7, rather than Vista. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa
