Yeah, this Christmas gift will be...a Windows 7. Heh, sounds like the WinRAR license joke...

But anyways, since I'm upgrading, just have a couple of questions:

1. Is there the possibility of using XP theme in 7? I'd really love to (low memory requirements + still looking nice.).

2. I know that 7 has a different way of handling folders and the whatnot (e.g. My Computer/My Network places/My documents not appearing on desktop)
I suppose that shouldn't be a major concern, right? I mean, there shouldn't be any problem with creating just a bunch of shortcuts, right?

3. Compatibility mode...no issues whatsoever until now, right?

4. Any other tips? Like disabling whatnot option?...

After upgrading myself just a couple of months ago I really have no issues currently however there were a couple of problems: installing TD, RA1 and Dune 2000 - it's not possible to install from the disc unfortunately. That's fine for TD and RA1 as the community distributes them unpacked anyway but D2k was much harder to find (infact I think it's a lightly modded version :sadface). I assume this issue exists with other old software installers.

For 4: Disable UAC or at least turn it down so it doesn't whine with every action you take #Tongue

Probably, but it would be a custom theme so just disable Aero if you're really that concerned.

You can put them on the desktop again. I sure as hell did.

None that I know of.

Google Windows 7 optimization tips if you really need them. I only disabled a few things for my SSD and that was it. You really don't need to turn off much since 7 has "delayed startups" so certain things only run when needed and don't otherwise.

1: I know you can set it to windows 98 looks, but wouldn't know if you could set it to XP looks. (Yes, my old laptop needed it for saving around 200 mb ram)

2: never cared about it, but in the Desktop toolbar they do appear, that's a toolbar on the taskbar.

3: Compatibility problems, on both 32bit and 64bit Windows 7 haven't had any serious issues or anything memorable.

4: turning down UAC is an option, do remember however that it also makes it easier for virusses etc to infect. point two to disable could be indexing, while not as bad as in vista(it killed my hard drive) it still eats up recources that could be used for better things.

If you turn UAC off, get a sick AV and Firewall. UAC is good for people who don't know what the fuck they're doing online #Tongue
