Ok so what if...
We set up a Kickstarter to raise money, and buy back Westwood from EA?
We get rid of everything EA did to the series, fix up the games as we will have access to their source codes. Then make a new game using the talent of everyone in the community.
Then roll in the dough we rake in, and save the RTS genera at the same time!
What could possible go wrong?
I mean, how much can a multi-billion dollar franchise possible cost?
Kickstarter sure is interesting, but
A) Legal issues around ownership are probable
B) How much money?
and
C) Once we owned the rights to C&C, what the hell would we do with them? Last edited by Orac on Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:36 am; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
Plus its probably been said countless times that source code stuff is LOST! Okay perhaps not to all games but yeah...
So buying remains of Westwood is not that good proposition, besides I would be doubtful there is much of concrete assets left as Westwood exists in no shape or form presently.
Plus your assuming EA would sell... Okay maybe they sell Westwood (WHAT EXISTS!?) but still keep C&C rights/brand as those they would not sell and any kickstarter financed project would have to be called something else.
Worthless idea, you'd only feed EA money. QUICK_EDIT
How 'bout we kickstart a raise to make guys like you STFU? You want us to buy back WW from EA and make CnC games with ultra crap AI and blobs of pixels for units? And why the fuck does the RTS genre needs to be saved? Its been doing well since Dune 2.
And WW is Petroglyph Studios. Clearly you ain't a WW fan if you didn't even know that. _________________ The future belongs to The Forgotten!
You guys are taking this way too seriously, it was made as a joke.
Even as a joke it wasn't really worth a laugh. There's a separate forum for funny (or supposed-to-be-funny) or otherwise non-serious stuff here where you can post and people would assume it's there for just shits and giggles rather than having to rely on obvious or not-so-obvious cues to identify sarcasm or a joke.
Oh yeah, and considering all the retarded stuff that regularly keeps popping up here on subject of Westwood or lost source code or whatever, you were just basically asking to be ridiculed, a joke or not. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
All that is left of Westwood is a shitload of DVD's with source backups and assets, large tapes with server backups and FMV raw material, and all of the props, printed artwork, and other silly stuff.
No one is getting anything code wise, and what chance we had is now lost due to someone taking the piss with the trust EA had with a select few. QUICK_EDIT

That said, Dominate and Destroy sounds awesome . QUICK_EDIT

Personally I'd rather have the props than code. Would be pretty sweet...
Westwood no longer exists though, I'm sure they'd happily sell Westwood Studios, which comprises of no staff members and no brands under its name. QUICK_EDIT

Like that ain't bad stuff to have?
The tapes alone come to ~500GB, and im guessing there has to be about 40GB of art assets and code on DVDs/CDs. QUICK_EDIT

This.
How am I supposed to know it's a joke when you seem to be seriously asking how much a multi-billion dollar franchise could possibly cost? _________________ QUICK_EDIT
They're dead, because they made some serious management mistakes, got low on cash, and sold themselves to EA. No use mourning a corpse. That's all.
no reason to spit hate on them either
Aye. We respect WW for introducing the modern RTS genre that all other games follow (Herzog Zwei came first though). When WW was already fucking up, EA bought the rights and kept the series going. Same with us. The problem is those parrots who do nothing more than yell,"EA SUCKS!!" all day long. Despite EA still making better and improved CnC games - save CnC4 - they still think WW's craptastic AI and blobs CnC games are infinite times better. Of course we go out to point out WW's flaws. Doesn't mean we should turn our backs and hate them though. But Nyerguds is right about mourning a corpse. Theres no use. Just go and look at Petro.
As epicelite already admitted, this is a troll thread. _________________ The future belongs to The Forgotten!
B) Probably more then the combined annual salary of every community member combined.
I make precisely 0$, so I can definitely affirm that.

personally i never liked generals, tough it has good game mechanics , but only because starcraft oriented mechanics, what is a good thing in the end, starcraft has proven to have good game mechanics with long time fun.
C+C 3 was a downer for me, i didn't like the engine as much, some of the designs feel awkward to me and certainly there are a lot improvements, but it was no game for me.
in retrospective TS was an unfinished construction site of a game wich had enormous potential, A: it came horribly late so the graphics were out of date B: they messed alot around cutting, adding, cutting, adding features and messed a lot of code, it was imbalanced and well, it could have been better, in the end it is a good game, on the other hand it would have had a lot to improve and a lot went wrong, still the art direction was very very good and thought out and it is something along with the atmosphere what made it unique.
and tiberian dawn, hands down, it is simple but it is C+C and i dont think any tiberium title we have now to this day could compete with it.
from the looks of it, anyhow, i'm growing more and more fond of starcraft because it simply works and has improved without sacrificing any fun value to it. it has great core mechanics, great gameplay, good art direction, and a clue where it's heading. unlike any C+C. _________________ Hydraw Art on Facebook QUICK_EDIT

well said blubb
me, I simply love TS/FS above any other C&C title because of atmosphere
the whole post apocalyptic life
C+C 3 may seem the same, but to me its just polished remake
with unattractive story, in short one big *YAWN*
while Tib Dawn, is also great but I miss skirmish in it
if it had all things TS had regarding skirmish/maps/AI
it would have been a blast too QUICK_EDIT
Anyhow, concerning C+C3; the main thing I disliked about it was the obvious difference in general "attitude" and the way it was too obvious it had a different story writer.
In some cases an obvious story writer can be a good thing (take the latest Badman movies for example), but in this case there's just nothing interesting about this new adaption of the original story (it mostly just ruins it).
I personally liked the story of TS (+TS) most of any C&C game and think it's a shame how RA2, C&C3, RA3 and TT made a joke of the C&C story. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

Agreed. But I don't think parrots shouting "WW sucks!!11" are any better.

I'm not really sure about the difference in attitude (it feels like a modernized TD for me), but the story and the singleplayer campaign were bad points for me (for example, I don't remember seeing a single GDI harvester during the whole Nod campaign -> the enemy used different mechanics than the player with infinite money). C&C3 multiplayer is awesome though, excluding the limited amount of maps. _________________ CnCNet Client | CnCNet TS patches | More Quality-of-Life Improvements for RA Remastered
Just saying, the story would've sucked if Isgreen had his way with it, and it wouldn't have been the same thing that they wanted after TS regardless. Westwood and EA are both ztyping terrible at consistency. Nevermind, a writer's idea will not stay the same over years and years even if they had the same writers for C&C3. _________________ Victory!
