Generals 2 is just Command & Conquer, free to play.
Subject description: No single player at launch, no modding.
Hey everyone! First of all, sorry for the lack of news. I'm deeply overloaded with a mission impossible: my master dissertation. I'm supposed to have finished it a couple of days ago.. yet I'm far from doing it. So, I'll be very quick in this news.
As some of you know, EA usually promotes C&C games on events like E3 and Gamescom (which is happening in Germany today). And, this time they've revealed a video that shows that Generals 2 is being renamed to Command & Conquer, taking a new direction. This article from IGN explain the details. The video says all.
FAQ wrote:
Why is this free?
As we talked with more strategy fans, we found major interest in a free-to-play game, as long as it maintained authenticity to the franchise and exceeded expectations for a modern AAA RTS. The Generals 2 universe is the first of many free offerings that we will deliver with Command & Conquer. You can sign up for a chance to get beta access at www.CommandandConquer.com/free.
Will it still use Frostbite?

Will there be a traditional single player campaign?
Not at launch. We are currently focused on building a fun, high quality RTS experience that we want to get in your hands on as soon as possible. From there, we will continuously evaluate additional content based on a variety of player feedback methods.

What is the difference between this new Command & Conquer and the Tiberium Alliances game?
Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances is a free, browser based Strategy-MMO game that introduces a new way for players to experience the Tiberium universe. This new Command & Conquer is a more traditional, full client RTS experience, powered by Frostbite 2 with stunning graphics and full destruction. Players will be immersed in high-octane strategy as they compete for resources, build up bases and lead massive armies into battle.
Will the service be available on consoles?
We're fully focused on delivering a high quality experience on PC at launch.
And finally, the words from EA_CIRE, official C&C community manager, who used more a fan based language to explain this move:
Note: all links were removed, since everything is in this news post.

Today at gamescom, we announced a bold move for EA and especially for the C&C franchise. I don’t want to go into the typical marketing mode here with you guys. Instead, I want to talk to you as an honest C&C fan.
If you haven’t seen it already, WATCH THE TRAILER! Pretty awesome and yes, that’s how the games looks on max settings right now. But you probably have a billion questions, so instead of simply linking you to the FAQ (oh, I just did), I will answer some questions right here.
There is a reason why this looks like Generals 2. Content we’ve built for Generals 2 isn’t going into the trash – It is marking the initial content for this new Free Command & Conquer game. The way you play won’t change – Start a fully feature loaded desktop client, choose a game mode, play with friends, build bases, gather resources and command massive armies – Just like you are used to from the original Generals. The major difference between Generals 2 and this newly announce Command & Conquer is the amount you have to pay.
You don’t have to pay 60 dollars upfront for a game that you haven’t played before. You can start for free and play for free. Everything is packed into the Frostbite 2 engine, which delivers a never before seen level of visual awesomeness for the C&C franchise. If you like the game, there will be possibilities to support its development with cool customization options that will give you the power to differentiate your army from everybody else on the battlefield.
I know this is something else – Something many of you didn’t expect and most of you probably will instantly counter with “RIP C&C” or “PIEP CENCORED PIEP”. My immediate first thought after hearing this the first time was similar. But after thinking a bit more about it, I realized that this is how games will change in the near future – This is a chance to bring the franchise to players that were always afraid of spending 60 dollars upfront as they didn’t know if they would enjoy an RTS. A chance to create a supported platform for Command & Conquer that will be influenced by how you guys are playing it and what you’re asking for. It is also planed to revisit the Red Alert and Tiberium universe in the future.
This post became much longer than I wanted to, but I care about C&C as much as you do. And that’s what I want to bring across here – It is different, but not from the inside as the core C&C gameplay is there – It is different from the outside which we can use for our advantage, creating a fresh new start for the franchise to new audiences as well.
In full honesty

And finally, in a completely unrelated note, Hypnotist has posted the season finale for C&C Legos season 4. It's a huge and fun episode. Check below and share your comments here.
i dont care what anyone says, most people including me have given EA enough chances until something comes out, blatantly said i'm fed up with EA and ztyping command & conquer. and yes i'm bashing EA because i don't like their shit in the slightest , say what you want i wont like to make "compromises" ztype you EA, ztype you compromising ones in the community and ztype those who keep calm and or love to buy their c&c shit. you people are douches, made my point. _________________ Hydraw Art on Facebook QUICK_EDIT
And Blizzard's removal of LAN and splitting of the game to three is better I guess. At least with this one you won't be losing €50 if you don't like the game.
I'm not being very optimistic about this new C&C being good either (Generals is one of the C&Cs which I dislike the most, along with C&C4 and RA3), but it's a new studio with a new excellent looking engine and they seem to be at least trying to do something refreshing rather than continuing the same milking (releasing one rushed game in a year) that EA did before. Also, I won't be losing anything from trying the game, so there isn't a reason why I wouldn't give them a chance (or at least waiting for some reviews before judging them).
I'm also not getting the hate towards the free-to-play model. F2P doesn't mean low quality. For instance, I'd say League of Legends is a game of great quality that is also a very popular eSports game (like Starcraft II), despite being F2P. Generally we've been seeing a lot of game companies moving to the F2P model lately, not only indie games but Crytek and now Victory Games as well. F2P is bad only if it's done wrong (pay-to-win), but it's great when it's done well. Even the "always online" requirement is getting less intrusive with stable and high-speed connections getting more popular. _________________ CnCNet Client | CnCNet TS patches | More Quality-of-Life Improvements for RA Remastered

I do agree with blubb there. But I think it's just like today's people that are 13-22 years old (something like that) saying that they miss the old TV shows and cartoons of their childhood and hate the new crap. Yet...I feel like most EA bashers are mad because these are supposed to be C&C games.
NO! These do not match C&C's quality in the slightest (my opinion). But, if you don't think of the fact these are C&C, these are very decent games. _________________ Tiberium Uprising (a few missions for TS): http://www.ppmsite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31029 QUICK_EDIT
Great, i'll sum this up for you, i had hopes for Generals 2, i hopes EA learned from Tiberian Twilight that this model of XP harvesting and differing the gameplay too much doesn't work with C&C fans and their community, on the top of it having the most freaking ugliest designs ever shown in an RTS.
It's not that it is hard, TW in itself had new great additions to the C&C mechanic we know.
It's not hard, we've expecting a good single player campaign from Generals 2, nice graphics, maybe a few tweaks and twists on the C&C gameplay mechanic, a Fixed price, a multiplayer mode capable of playing online AND skirmish by oneself with bots.
Now what they did, look at facebook, pissing the ztype on the community AGAIN SOMEHOW by changing this shit MIDWAY through developing, supposedly trolling everyone who would loved a Good Gen2. Having Free to play (common, it's EA) it's nothing else than PAY TO WIN, for example "pay us this amoung of cash if you want to advance the techtree" or some bullshit like that, having no singleplayer campaign to delve further into the clash of these factions, no SKIRMISH to play themselves, and what do we get? DO you REALLY think this half assed change will do this game good? you must be so so so so blind Rampa, to think that, you must have thought "well i give it a chaahance if it comes out , maybe it's good" about tiberian twilight, but, by no lies, we all knew how it would end up, this is blind hope and scratching the fun by tiny bits out of a shitpile, if i want to get "aaan existing free to play RTS" i go STARCRAFT 2 by paying a fixed price, having everything that makes an RTS good and start the online thing if i WANT TO by being competitive! and i know i might hear some comments from people like furryqueen pissing my leg for this bashing, but lets face it, this is not our game anymore nor is it true to it's core nature. it's shit developed by EA, thats what it is. _________________ Hydraw Art on Facebook QUICK_EDIT
Yes, but that's extra.
And of course, the game will get a real subtitle later, but it will cost you also.
Most likely they will also consider charging you for the game's installer... QUICK_EDIT

I don't get the crying over SP/campaing. It was going to be a friggin' Generals; how many of you enjoyed the campaigns of the first one? Honestly? Remember all the memorable plot twists and epic endings?
Perhaps I'm the only one who couldn't have cared less when I heard it's going to be second generals... but now it's free and I have to care even less if it sucks.

This argument gets me every time. So just because Generals 1 had a shitty storyline and campaign that means Generals 2 would have a shitty storyline and campaign as well? _________________ mentalomega.com QUICK_EDIT
It's much more probable that a good first part will spawn a bad second part than vice-versa.
Considering EA's track record, I wouldn't expect already shitty first part to have an interesting second part, especially with factions as dull and boring as GLA and EU. _________________ Check out some TF Kane's Wrath action:

Hey, Red Alert 2 was awesome! That means Red Alert 3 must be awesome too!
Seriously..
Ra 3 is much better than Generals 2 even will be I think. And I think Generals 2 will not be moddable _________________ Can you hide from me ? QUICK_EDIT
I don't think the "sequels suck" rule really applies to video games, at least not initially. Many series have great sequels that are often better than the originals simply because gameplay can be improved and with the Generals series the story doesn't even have to follow it's predecessor at all, it could just be any crazy near future situation.
When BioWare was involved (not sure if they still are) there was great potential for good plot or at least a fun campaign that throws the player into all sorts of situations to save the world. The 'lore' really didn't have to be A-grade with Generals, just damn fun and cool (and shouldn't be A-grade with C&C anyway. When I hear a game is 'AAA' quality I think of the mindless bullshit that is Call of Duty and similarly brainless shitty Hollywood inspired games).
For me skirmish is a waste of time, I don't play it. MP is fun of course but can get boring without some nice context which campaigns provide. They give a nice break to the endless arena and competitive gameplay. Even some kind of co-op campaign would be nice (and would suit Generals terribly well IMO). I'm sure they'll do a co-op Generals Challenge or something similar though. QUICK_EDIT

i like ra3 except resource collecting system. atleast i like the game more than c&c3 in many way. 3 interesting different faction [i really hate scrin design in TW] , small size unit , sea battle , every unit have one special ability , amazing looking graphic and animation , interesting unit desing and machanic to use them , list of unit , small scale base battle to medium scale.
people just hate it because anime like unit? QUICK_EDIT
Lame that it has no singleplayer (most played part of C&C IMO)
Lame that it is online only.
Lame. And just laughing at the fact they put out for pre-orders and now are taking them back. Show's how much they have their sh*t together. _________________ "Don't beg for things; Do it yourself or you'll never get anything." QUICK_EDIT
Is there really no singleplayer? They said the game won't have it at launch ---> implying there will be singleplayer in one form or another. _________________ The future belongs to The Forgotten! QUICK_EDIT

Not particularly since it's a free to play model. You're not paying anything for the base game but you'll pay for each additional chunk. Long as it's not part of the core game and you don't lose anything for not buying it, it's fine. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa

I was thinking more of faction addons with prettier content, and slightly unbalanced units, for multiplayer. There's no reason they wouldn't do that, especially if it's going to be a subtle hint of unbalanced, and especially if it'll get people to pay.
I'd also laugh if their F2P model involved subscriptions. _________________ Please, I DON'T read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Yes Generals 2 would have a shitty story line. Have you read the synopsis for the damn thing? All of the world leaders meet in one place to discuss world peace and then they get nuked and they all die? I'm fairly certain whoever wrote the Twilight series could come up with a better story than that. That breaks so many well established "rules" in our world. Fact of the matter is it would never happen in such a way as to compromise the world leaders of every single nation. Not to mention, most governments have a continuity system to prevent "Generals" from taking over the country. This shitty storyline was obviously written as an afterthought and edited by a 3 year old.
Also: Age of Empires Online. Enough said. I consider it at least a AA game. _________________ You come for the modding but you stay for the Crap Forum. QUICK_EDIT
Nah. Even the story for Generals 2 is a better love story than Twilight. I'd much rather take a heavy handed and wildly ludicrous story over that Twilight garbage any day. _________________ Discord: princess_marisa
