I'm on my laptop as usual, I unplugged my headphones for a second to put it in my iPod to listen to something. When I put my headphones back into my laptop, it's not that I couldn't hear sound, I was still hearing sound through the speakers even though the headphones are plugged in.

I have two headphone jacks, and I plugged it into the one I never use (but I knew that one worked), yet that one didn't work either.

Usually when I plug in headphones, I get the little taskbar message "You have plugged in a device to Audiojack" or something like that. Now it doesn't appear. The audiojacks aren't registering suddenly, and I can't find the settings for it in the control panel.

Either the device went bad or your 1/4" connector port went bad. Test known working headphones. Might also try updating your sound driver.

This has occurred a couple of times to me. I simply updated the driver and it works again. Sometimes all I have to do is restart the laptop as well.
Seems to always do this to me every 4-6 months especially if I play games that, for whatever god awful reason, decide when they start up they don't want to detect if anything is in the audio jacks and thus revert back to the laptop speakers until the device in the audio jack is unplugged and plugged back in after the start up sequence of the game. (maybe that issue for me is related to Steam as it occurs when playing TW, RA3, Borderlands and another game or two through steam.)

I actually solved this the day after I posted it. I ended up going to bed, and when I turned on my computer, it worked again.

Well, shutting it down I guess is what I did, but yeah basically that.
