G'day one and all.

I've recently started encountering a strange issue on my computer, after around 20 minutes to 1 hour all of my internet browsers have issues loading pages. I don't get any errors telling me pages can't be loaded, but they instead just attempt to try loading the page continuously whilst remaining on my last viewed page. My internet connection is fine, I have a second computer and a phone connecting perfectly fine. I've; run several anti virus scans in and out of safemode, deleted unneeded history files, de-fragmented, system restored etc etc. Steam chat still works, as do torrents and I think DropBox, the inbrowser for Steam fails to load pages.

Additionally I'm running Windows 7 64bit home edition, is there a problem with running certain ASUS motherboards on it? When I shutdown my computer Windows closes but the actual computer doesn't shut down.

I never had such an issue, but you're not alone

Do you have Zone Alarm as antivirus? This name pops up quite a lot when searching for your issue.

If this is every website but other services load, it sounds sort of like a DNS connection problem. Services like Dropbox, Steam and the like will probably use direct IP connections or ranges so there's no DNS translation. Fire up the command prompt then run ping google.com and tell me what happens.

If nothing else, open up your IPv4 properties then for DNS servers, use 8.8.8.8 as the Primary and 8.8.4.4 as the Secondary.

For the the final symptom, that sounds like Vista instead of 7. There are actually two shut down commands, but try this in the command prompt: shutdown -s -t 00.

I spent a little time fiddling around, several boots and virus scans in safemode and trying all of the suggestions, however after a completely random amount of time my browsers still just keep not connecting it can be anything from 30 minutes to 5 hours, during this time I pinged google succesfully and torrents and dropbox still functioned like a charm, just I had a constant "Waiting for response" off all websites.

Additionally, my powering down problem is the same on my dads Win 7 PC which has only 1 program installed on it. Windows will shut off, screens go black and all software functions cease but the fans are still active. I've heard it can be an issue with the motherboard not powering down, I've updated to the latest drivers and software and no joy :/

EDIT: My AntiVirus software is AVG Free (though it recently entered 30 day trial mode, disabling it had no effect) and Spybot S&D.

What kind of internet provider you have? Comcast? AT&T? Cricket?

I used to have Comcast as an internet provider and I got like that where the internet will just wait and wait for response for all website. Eventually, I switch to a different internet provider and it works smoothly and fine. Sometime it might has things to do with the internet providers.

You should go to the computer store and have a tech person to check it out for you to find what is really wrong with it.

I'm with Telstra Bigpond, but I don't see how my internet provider has anything to do with it, as I stated in my first post my second PC and phone can connect fine and run as normal, all none browser related activity on this machine works fine just the browsers themselves go funny after "X" period of time.

When the browser goes to shit, are you consistently using other services like Steam or torrents? Try shutting them off to test whether or not some extraneous application is slowing your connection. I've had a similar issue before but I ended up having to reboot my system to clear whatever the problem was. It's starting to sound like a bandwidth problem of sorts.

What browser do you use? Firefox? Chrome? Opera? IE?

Do you have a separate PCI Ethernet card, or do you use a MotherBoard onboard LAN connector?
If it's the latter, it could be a Mobo hardware issue like a broken APM controller. Do both of your PCs (yours and your dads) have the same MoBo? If they are the same, it could be a general problem of this MoBo series.

Maybe the MoBo has a bit lying askew and thus breaking several logics. In the past, i had the strangest effects with slightly damaged MoBos and it was always a hell to find that culprit as you normally check everything else first.

If you have the chance, you should try it with a different MoBo.

Another possibility is overheating. Check your CPU and MoBo temp. The fans could keep running after shutdown to cool down the system.
And the high temps on the system could cause instability and strange effects like the browser issue (even if that is admittedly quite far fetched)

@FQ

I only have uTorrent on when absolutely necessary (Australian internet has monthly D/L and U/L allowances), Steam is occasionally on in the background. When the problem occurs I've loaded uTorrent separately and it will download files fine at my normal speeds, as I said Steam chat will continue working as normal though the inbuilt browser for viewing the Store will fail. I mainly use Google Chrome, though I've alternated between Chrome, FireFox and IE with this issue occurring and it affects all of them. The problem doesn't seem to be related to how much bandwidth I'm using either. I can only imagine there's an application or virus occurring causing this as a restart solves everything, I notice no odd programs running though and I kinda apps in a very spartan manner as my comp isn't all that powerful. As I said earlier as well, I've done several virus scans in different modes with nothing nasty detected.

@LKO

I purchased my computer shortly after my dad got his, I'm fairly confident he shares the same motherboard as me but a better CPU. His PC from day one has never shutdown properly, I'm sure when I first built mine it initially shutdown and overtime developed this strange not powering off problem. My comp runs at relatively low temperatures even during our extremely hot parts of the year. I read something about selecting USB 1394 in Device Manager and selecting "Allow the computer to turn off device" though I don't even have that listed in my Device Manager.

I've had quite a few people bring this kind of thing to me, and whether it's a virus or windows update broke the file or just windows being windows, both 7 and Vista have this issue. It's caused by the Internet Information Services being corrupt.
Now sometimes you can fix this by enabling, disabling, and enabling the IIS via Programs and Features, BUT most of the time this doesn't work and you end up either having to uninstall all the browsers, and reinstall, starting with IE. And if that doesn't work, then you have to just reinstall. Oh, you could also try updating Windows, if you haven't tried that already.

Windows is just the buggiest thing in the world (As far as OS's go). You should switch to Linux #Tongue

Usually that's not overheating, it's the fact that Windows won't shut down without first being able to turn off ALL Port devices and programs, and if it fails, it sticks itself in an endless loop, kinda like most things WW codes #Tongue
You can try just ejecting all the USB controllers (not everything is listed in windows as its port {1394}) first in Device Manager, though if you don't have a PS2 mouse, you can't.

Or, just try taking out all the USB devices before you shut down.

If you're running a Home version OS, IIS shouldn't even be running at all. That's the server protocol service. It should have no effect on Internet usability. At all. That just makes no sense at all.

I had a similar shutdown issue with my Asus M5A97 and a BIOS update fixed it, so that's one possibility. For the issue with internet connectivity, trying to ping google.com using the command prompt when the issue occurs could reveal some useful information about the problem.

You could actually try to post useful information instead of spreading typical fanboy / MS hater stuff.
