3ds Max or 3ds Max Design?

Which do you think is the best for making 3d models and for rendering SHPs?

3ds Max works fine.  I'm not even sure what a "Design" edition adds..  Or that there even is one.

Okay, which version of 3ds Max do you think is the best? I kinda don't like the latest version and I heard that there was an old version of 3ds Max that is commonly used

The C&C3 and RA3 SDKs don't work with anything but Max 8 and 9, if memory serves.

The CNC3/RA3 tools should actually work with any versions from 9 to above, there is a big performance difference between 9 vs 2010, if you can, test them with 9 and 2010/2013.
The Design edition is a version that has features like realistic simulations and a lot more that can be used when projecting real life architecture, basily to architects its a excellent tool for testing their design, to us its a fatter more ram eating version of Max

2013 works super fast and has tons of plugins, but you may still want to stick with 2009 because of the considerable less ram usage and the free VRay. I used to run with 2009, it's very reliable, but 2013 is just so much nicer with alot more options, improved rendering, etc. Not that rendering is really important to exporting to RA3/C&C3.

Okay, I'm currently downloading the 2012 version of 3ds Max. Any good tutorials or templates about how to setup 3ds Max environment to get it ready importing 3d models and rendering them as SHP for TS/FS and/or for RA2/YR
