I've been playing in Illustrator... again. This time making the Coats of Arms for each of the five houses in the Helios Empire. Smile

House Sariah
- Led by Her Majesty, Queen Skylar Elizabeth Sariah, known as the Queen of the Stars. House Sariah is known as the Kingdom of the Sun. All other houses are loyal to House Sariah.
- Home: City of the Sun, Helios III
- Lineage: Dates back to 1150BPE - European Core Worlds

House Spoore
- Led by Lady Alexandra Marie Spoore, known as Alexandra the Fierce. Considered Defenders of the Realm. Fields the largest navy of all the houses.
- Home: New Dallas, Elysium V
- Lineage: Dates back to 1650BPE - North American Core Worlds

House Pierre-Claud
- Led by Lord Montrose and Lady Avril Pierre-Claud, known as the Twins of the West. House is well known for traders and entrepreneurs. Relaxed customs allow for more lucrative trade
- Home:  Spire City, Callia II
- Lineage: Dates back to 1820BPE - European Core Worlds

House Zeitzev
- Led by Lord Dominik Zeitzev, more commonly known as the Metal Lord. House is known for its industrial base and heavy industry.
- Home: Feros City, Feria IV
- Lineage: Dates back to 1650BPE - European Core Worlds

House McTavish

Very nice, though I think if I'd change anything I'd make the Sariah shield a bit larger.

@ Smiff: I've got a lot of Scottish in me, so I'll take that as a compliment #Tongue These are for the Helios Chronicles, an indie game that my brother, my girlfriend's best friend and I are all working on together.

@Aro & TB: Thanks guys!

@4star: I am inclined to agree. I had to to shrink it to fit it since the decorations are so large, however it looks odd. I'll resize. These are vectors so they can be resized infinitely up or down without distortion.

I keep getting impressed with what is possible with Illustrator. Is the lower twirly edge also done in Illustrator? If so, did you do that by hand (impressive if so) or are there some tools/templates for that?

Looks like it just uses a specific kind of brush or something like that.

It's not a brush, it'd definitely illustrator

And it's really not that hard to do. You add anchors and make curves out of them. At first it seems like such a daunting task, but it gets easier and easier as you learn more and more about Ai.

Very nice artwork but I do not like the renderer of this software and I do not like that the vector art files from it are not compatible with programs like 3DS Max, so basically you will have to redo all these from scratch for the final product.

ViPr, that didn't make any sense. These aren't supposed to be for 3d. They're coats of arms. not 3d models. Vector work is 2D.

Vectors are compatible with 3ds Max or most 3d applications as you import them as splines, so if he did want to import them he could.

The lines become splines and the anchors become vertex.

You have to render them in a 3D rendering program.

Are you sure that adobe vectors are compatible with 3DS Max because, in the company I worked for, on multiple occasions, we tried exporting in various formats and none of them would import correctly into 3DS Max. Many hours had to be wasted redoing everything from scratch in 3DS Max.

My impression of Adobe is very bad. I feel that they are a very incompetent company that must be abolished as soon as possible.

you have to save them as .ai format and Illustrator 6 compatible.

Only then can you import them into 3ds max

I've had to do this for a few paid for work i've done (not just hobbie stuff) so it does work trust me Smile

If you have any probs let me know and ill try and explain it more.

Thanks for the information. I don't know why these companies have to cause so much aggravation.

But 3D models are effectively vectors in three dimensions.

That's like saying a Vegetable is effectively a fruit without pips

3D models are truly vector and Illustrator does read from 3DSMax, and I believe there is a plugin to read from SVG's as well.

This is all irrelevant to the topic though.
