You can't crunch numbers so simple. A game in the 90s can not compare to one of today. how many gamers where then and how many now? How many used the internet that would hear about the game? How many were living on earth? How much money was put into advertising? How well established was the franchise? Since how long is a game around having time to sell? EA probably had their own goals for C&C, goals they suspected it wouldn't meet, what TD did in sales doesn't matter but hey it made it into hte Guiness book of world records or was it TS or both?
You're saying a game back then couldn't do as well then without so many people with PCs, internet, interested in games etc which has clearly exploded in the last decade, and I would agree with you. However on that list the first C&C is still doing better than any others, meaning sales have continually declined for the franchise despite the increase in all those things you talked about.

That indeed tells that C&C is messed up. No denying there. Also I own TD 3 times because of the collections and I dunno how those sale numbers are made so could it be that they did not consider the length of time it is around? Are the numbers about the first year?

Its really hard to tell as also the predecessors such as Dune could play a role and the fame of WW and EA and what not. TD is called the first true RTS as well.

Thinking about it I don't really want to say old games couldn't sell that well but rather that different factors affect the sales that have little to do with the actual game and more with everything around and about it. So judging the game's success by higher number of sales feels wrong to me. Honestly every C&C game after 4 that doesn't completely fail would I see at least partially as a huge success.

I think the arguments have been laid out pretty soundly, the fans are a good portion of the problem with C&C and why the sequels go nowhere...

that said, im kind of sad to see this sunk, but at the same time, it looked like it would be mediocre. Whatever.

I think it wouldn't be mediocre, devs really were in touch with feedback during these 6-7 months of alpha. Tim Morten was replying to some topics why some features are doable, debatable and "no-no". AFAIK they wanted to add infantry crushing, infantry squads were questionable and of course, F2P with obligatory being online all time wasn't possible to remove because of EA's politics. All dev teams have got autonomy but a lot of features aren't possible to change - look at the newest Simcity, of course it's possible to make it offline but devs can't change it.

The long time plan to expand C&C 2013 into a sort of all stars including all the factions C&C ever had be it T and RA and G could of have made for the best C&C ever. Maybe they scrapped the game because of that plan, no longer wanting to do or fund this project. Generals 2 was supposedly only the first part of the whole game from what I read on IGN.

To that end, we have already begun looking at a number of alternatives to get the game back on track.

Maybe not all hope is lost.

Personally speaking I was not amazed on the outcome of the development as well. It's not cool to us because we expect that they will continue developing the game even though there are lots of suggestion and requests came from the fans. I'm worried on the money they've spent and to all the fans out here and everywhere who were expecting to make the game look even better than C&C4 and what they did is just backed the project out, which is not cool for us.

And as for Nero's case, yes EA really likes to ztype games to death but at least IMO, PvZ2 and Dead Space series were left intact (even though PvZ2 was developed by Pop Cap games.

Damn that is kind of funny. I was not to interested in Gen 2 to begin with. But I was however looking foreword to a new RTS game, as there is not to many out there anymore.

Damn!

On the bright side of things you didn't see EA doing to Generals 2 what it has done to Ultima and to Dungeon Keeper the other F2P games.

here they force you to watch a FIFA trailer to earn gold keys. You need more than one gold key to open a crate with trash.
