I've been a fan of macross for a long time now and naturally i tried to look at the other side and get into robotech, especially what people like about it.

But i'm always put off by so many things, and i think it may be because i saw macross first and value the original source material a lot more.

Always when i tried to watch the robotech series or the movie i noticed that the guys behind the show seem to have frankensteint atleast 4-5 shows into 1 and those are shows i already have seen as original title under their own respective name and universe. It won't for some reason work under any circumstances that i can get into it. Hell i can't even comprehend how it works for other people, only explanation which may apply here is that most people ONLY knew robotech and none of the other titles so they thought it was one piece without noticing.

then the soundtrack, the BGM in macross has created a unique atmosphere with just the right weight. everything is orchestral except the sung music which is part of the story. where i find in robotech very generic
BGM and Songs.

Did someone grew up with robotech and knows whats up or am i really too old? Very Happy

i just leave this here... : D

gosh, makes me wanna watch it again.

Well the thing is, Robotech is a product of the times. Made from merging three unrelated Shows to fit syndication at the time. Trying to make an Animated show, let alone an Anime work on US televisions in the 80's was a feat, and for it's time, Robotech did admirable.

That is until the Licenser of the Robotech shows, Harmony Gold Decided to be a major Jerk to everyone. But that is a tale for another day.

If you have the opportunity, Stay with the original shows. Robotech is not going to change, but Macross is ever expanding. Robotech is Famed in the west for being the big budget Anime that did not focus on some robits fightan, but about the characters, and the other very Macross feeling. It was the gateway anime for those who grew up in the 80's and it has a fierce nostalgia factor because of it. But that does not make one inherently better than the other, just different interpretations though the lens of the cultures at the time.

Though Any "Robotech Sequels" like shadow chronicles suck horribly. Don't watch them.

I feared something like this when i saw "megazone 23" footage titled as Robotech which apparently fits together with established macross universe, which was hella odd to me since i saw megazone 23 first. i believe thats a big factor. what about harmony gold being jerks?

tho...after diving deeper into it the clusterfuck that happened is quite clear....i have NO idea how they could manage to make so much footage work as a coherent series, not in the slightest.

Apparently Robotech is made up from following animes:

Macross:

Genesis climber mospeada:

Super Dimension Southern Cross:

Megazone 23:

(coincidentally i found out that megazone 23 also served as huge inspiration for the matrix universe...)

I have no idea how they made that work, but hats off.

Well the 80's were different from today, and the Televised rules are different.

I've got a few Robotech DVDs but I never really got into it. On the other hand I'd kill to get a Macross DVD set, AFAIK Macross Plus is the only thing that has been released in the UK/EU tho :/

In the US, Original Macross, Macross II, and Macross Plus were released by other companies while the rights troll Harmony Gold had little. HG Spent all there post Robotech money trying to anyone from using "There" rights (that they only had limited) like Mech Warrior and Transformers.

HG started to get more support when movie stars like Toby Mcguire desided to attempt a Robotech movie (currently in development hell) and poured money into them. Here's a little touch of what they did (on there sparce Wiki page)

the 08th MS team is a good show, but due note, there is a tone shift because the director died half way though it. Not to say one half is better, but the second half has one of my Favorite Mech battles in all of Anime (no sppoilers, but it does involve an Ace.)

08th MS team is seen with the other 90's Gundam OVA(original video animation) Along with 0080 War in the pocket, 0083 stardust memories and Wing Endless waltz and the high point of Mecha in america, and the west. Macross Pluss was also relesed at this time. By the way, watch M+ it is really well animated!

Are you talking about Build Fighters?, well if you are it is an AU, so it is an spinoff. I understand why you might not like it, since a lot of the fun comes from all the cameos they've included, specially the good ends.

Anyway I would highly recommend 0080: war in the pocket. Meanwhile it's not as action packed as 08th MS team, it has a much better plot.

OT: Go with http links instead of https, then the tag will work.

Should I mark it with an "IMO" Or something???

I can't prop a show I like for the part that did not make me want to punch a wall? I mean it's not my  ********IMO********* for 0083, That show makes me mad at the characters, so I'll still say check out the Fights, I mean even if it is just YT clips.

I can have opinions on different aspects or am I on old /M/ now?
