I am betting the answer is no, but I have to ask. In a normal multi player map will the AI use tunnels

Yes. They do. Put some tib/ore at one side of a tunnel and give the AI a miner, it'll go through the tunnel.

For the map I have in mind there will be no "ore" at low ground level

In that case the only real way to know if it works it just to test it.
My reply confirms the AI is able to use tunnels, so it might work with general attack teams too.
Just test it with an AI that is closed off completely except for having 1 tunnel, make them attack you and see what happens.

Ok, tested the whole tunnel deal and have found that the AI will actually use tunnels, so thank you RP.... I was surprised by this, but now the question is... Can a tunnel be  visually 2 cells wide. I am looking at making a new tunnel

I am thinking of making a land bridge like this... two tunnels 2 cells wide with one cell in between. I would like to know before I go through the trouble and make the new tunnel piece.

I think so, yeah. I'm less sure about this than with the question whether the AI uses tunnels.

In map terms, it's just 2 tube entries less in [Tubes].
I'm not sure whether you can test it with a 3-cell tunnel because of possible special properties.
Maybe you could hack some lo-fi 2-cell tunnel together and see what it does.

As RP said the tubes are what really make the tunnels, the TMP file is just really the Gfx & can be made whatever size you like.

BTW naval units cant use tunnels, only amphibious units can use water tunnels.

This is what I was going for 1 tunnel piece (8 cells wide) with 2 tunnels. the only tunnel links would be the actual road pieces 4 cells highlighted with the red lines, blue would not be tunnel links. Since I made the piece I might as well make the other so  I can test it. still working on wall textures.
