Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. For starters, I would like to apologize for not posting PPM or community news as often as I used to a couple of years ago, I have become a very busy man since the golden days on PPM so keeping on top of the community and everything that happens around here other than for my own mods is a difficult task to keep on top of, I give kudos to Banshee for being able to do it so well!

It has been bought to my attention today by Apollo that EA plans to shut down over 50 multiplayer game servers, this will apparently happen this year on the 30th of June! The article that I was linked to contains all the necessary information on what games will be getting the axe, unfortunately, some of these titles were some of mine and maybe even your personal favorites. Here is the list of games EA will be shutting down. The list includes not only PC games, but Nintendo DS and Wii games as well.

  • Battlefield Vietnam for PC
  • Bejeweled (r) 2 for the Wii
  • Bulletstorm for PlayStation 3
  • Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for PC and Mac (including Kane’s Wrath expansion)
  • Command & Conquer: Generals for PC and Mac (including Zero Hour expansion)
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for PC and Mac

  • FIFA Street 3 for Nintendo DS
  • Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers for PlayStation 2
  • Global Operations for PC
  • GREEN DAY: ROCK BAND for the Wii
  • James Bond: Nightfire for PC
  • Madden NFL 08 for Nintendo DS
  • Madden NFL 09 for Nintendo DS
  • Master of Orion III for PC
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault for PC and Mac (including Breakthrough and Spearhead expansions)
  • MySims Party for Wii
  • MySims Racing for Nintendo DS
  • MySims SkyHeroes for the Wii and DS
  • NASCAR Sim Racing for PC
  • NASCAR Thunder 2003 for PC
  • NASCAR Thunder 2004 for PC
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for PC

  • Need for Speed: Undercover for Nintendo DS
  • Neverwinter Nights 2 for PC and Mac
  • Neverwinter Nights for PC, Mac and Linux (including Hordes of the Underdark and Shadows of Undrentide expansions)
  • SimCity Creator for Wii
  • Skate It for Nintendo DS
  • Sneezies for the Wii
  • Spore Creatures for Nintendo DS

  • Star Wars: Battlefront for PC and PlayStation 2
  • Star Wars: Battlefront II for PC and PlayStation 2

I have seen this news before prior to being linked to it today, but I wasn't entirely convinced whether or not it was genuine until I researched it myself a few moments ago.

EA Representatives wrote:
As games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level - typically fewer than 1 percent of all peak online players across all EA titles - where it's no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running.

GameSpy is one of the two online services officially supported for C&C Renegade (next to WOL/XWIS), it'll be shutting down too but there's a community replacement up.

Its either going bad for EA or they are prehaps using dirty tactics to fore gamers to buy the latest game of the series.

No. GameSpy has decided on their own will to abandon their online gaming business where these games relied on, in order to work.

By the way, the computer that hosts this site has an online server that emulates GameSpy for games such as Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2, as you can see here. It could be possible to expand that to cover Generals, C&C3 and RA3 if you guys cooperate by capturing packets that are sent or received by GameSpy on actions such as login, victory, defeat, quick match, victory and defeat on ranked matches, etc by using WireShark and sending this information to Phil, at Revora Forums. Note however, that a Generals server is not at the top of their priority list (they still need to recreate quick match and ladder there).

This is really weird as they still sell most of the games on Origin. GameSpy closing is not really a valid reason. They can host their own master servers and patch the games accordingly.

At least shutting down the last C&C games that were succesfull (but for some wierd reason leave C&C4?), will certainly not make them more popular than they are now...

Shutting down C&C4 would make the game (even more) unplayable, as as far as I can tell it requires the player to be online at all times even for singleplayer.

C&C4 doesn't use GameSpy at all.

We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.

New Objective has been acquired for CNCnet: Expand your network base and establish forward base to maintain the base power (games) online until reinforcements (new mods) has arrived.

I love to hate on EA just as much as the next guy for what they done to WestWood (C&C) and Trauma Studios (Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942) but GameSpy is the one pulling the plug.

If you want to EA hate, hate EA for not steping up and saving there games like many other Devs/Pubs have.

At this point, I'd expect some other company to step up and take GameSpy's place.
There's plenty of money to be made in the server business, especially for a big company like EA
