So that also means you won't go outside anymore?

Other than that, nice specs. Bit overkill, but hey, whatever suits your needs for 12 TERABYTE of porn! Smile

I actually don't have that much porn. That space is for all of the games, movies, TV shows and whatnot that I have. I still play new games so it's not really overkill. #Tongue

Krow, those things are actually cheap (or at least not very expensive) in his land.

And Fen, that's a very nice machine, btw... and that's a lot of hard disk space, as RP mentioned. I'm just surprised with the 16gb of RAM. I expected 32 from you... although I doubt that you'd actually notice any difference between 16gb and 32gb... at least nowadays.

I often wish that PC parts were as cheap here as in the US. Especially GPUs are a lot more expensive, for example Radeon R9 290s seem to be 250$ in the US but here they're like 350€. GTX 970s are about 400€.

That's a very nice system though.

Pretty nice computer, but why a fan controller? The motherboard doesn't support fan control in the UEFI?

And why a i7 4790k on a H97 motherboard? I'm pretty sure H97 doesn't allow you to make use of the unlocked multiplier on the k CPU's unless I have missed something.

I saved my money for a while to get this. I didn't just buy it on a whim because I had $2800 and said "Why the fuck not?"

Quote:

Surround sound is a planned upgrade, as is a G-SYNC 1440p monitor. And yeah, I bought two screens anyway. #Tongue

I'll put another 16 in eventually, but for now, 16 will be enough.

I like fan controllers. #Tongue

I don't see why it wouldn't. If I do overclock, it won't be by much without a slightly better cooling system. However, that's more for the future than for right now.

Asrock have unlocked K OC provisions with H87/H97 chipsets in some of their mobos. The same make Z97
claims of DDR3-3200 and a bit more flexibility in OC than H97. Other specs like 8 phase power design etc.
are same in both H97/Z97 for this model.

Nice specs though. Some might build a PC for the cost of GTX 980!

I built mine for 1/5 cost of such.

But really, if this is needed for "modern" games to be played on then I should just lose faith in gaming - this is way more than Technology Marches On and moreso seems sloppy optimization.

Depends on what you mean with "run".

Crysis 3 at max settings 60 FPS running at 4k? Not powerful enough.
Crysis 3 at max settings 60 FPS at 1440p? You need another GTX980.
Crysis 3 at max settings 60 FPS at 1080p? More than powerful enough.
Crysis 3 at high settings 60 FPS 1080p to 4k good enough.

anything else that isn't Crysis 3 at max settings it is pretty much overkill.

A Radeon 280x (or a HD7970) runs every "normal" game pretty nicely at 1080p, heck even a HD5870 does.

What do you mean with "normal" game? The HD5870, while still able to run the latest games, isn't able to max out most AAA titles from the last 1-2 years (at 1080p) and some of latest titles probably force it to low/medium settings. I have a HD 7850 (slightly faster than the 5870 and 1 GB more VRAM) and Arma 3, released in 2013, sometimes makes me wish that I had a stronger GPU. Many more FPS games (like Crysis 3, BF4) would probably have the same effect but I'm not really into FPS games.

The Witcher 3 (to be released in May) will have a minimum GPU requirement of GTX 660 / HD 7870, so a 5870 won't even be able to run it.

Now, if by "normal" games you mean games like LoL and CSGO (popular games that a lot of people play), a 5870 is easily able to max those out. Some of the less demanding latest games like Dragon Age Inquisition probably also run very well on a 5870, but for many games it's just not enough if you want high settings and/or a smooth framerate.

A HD 7970 / GTX 680 indeed is still enough for a nice experience in any game though (at reasonably high settings), I agree with that.

CPU wise the requirements haven't been increasing as fast as with GPUs however, the first i5s/i7s and Phenom II X4s from 2009 still run the latest games well from what I've seen and experienced.

Should probably clarified what I meant with "normal" game - any not particularly demanding game like Bioshock Infinite or WarGame or most games at normal/medium settings.

Arma 3 is not what I would call a "normal game", but it did run ok on my old PC at 1920 x 1200 on normal/low with a HD5870. Arma 3 benefits primarily from a faster CPU than GPU though.

While it's possible to build a good machine for that little, I had one stronger than that already. It was time for something good and strong. Should last a good long while. #Tongue

A fifth the cost of my entire PC, sure. A fifth the cost of my GTX980, not even close.

You do realize that games won't stay the same forever, don't you? New games require a lot more oomph to play at reasonable frame rates. I refuse to play anything below 60FPS and the build I have coming in will pretty much ensure that I get or higher, and will do so for a long time to come. I also plan on getting a G-SYNC 1440p screen. A cheap gaming build won't be near enough power for that. I also do other work on virtual machines that need some extra power to do without slowing down the rest of my shit.

Shit son. Might as well. #Tongue

If you did that for $110, bravo. But I doubt that would be possible.

FurryQueen, I missed the note that we are talking about a fifth of the cost. I spoke at full cost GTX980

memory + CPU + Mainboard cost me about $200 in mid-summer. I have an old HDD. SSD - 2 years, I bought it for about $150.
