1. you'll need to learn elglish...i'm still learinging myself.

2. You'll need a crew and a cew that are as crazy as you are.

3. You will have to have a bunch of modding tools and then learn how to use them.

4. Your mod will most likely suck untill you understand the game your modding inside out and all the mod tools.

Search on google for a tool known as Universal Game Editor.

It's a DOS tool that really works well to edit the existing units and some of their properties. You can also mess up with mix files to have different images for units, but the SHP format that it uses is different than the one used in TS and RA2. Only XCC Mixer converts files to SHP that is used by TD and RA1.
