so i got a problem, ive set my self the task of hand drawing shps.

what overlays do ppl use when hand drawing a shp. as i'm having difficulty homogenising my images.

here's a quick example of a few images i cant seem to get aligned with each other. current using a home made overlay that's a cut and paste job of OS shp's builder show center option. download and cut and past a plethora of isometric grids but none seem to cut it.

I'd just find the center of your unit (in this case the waist), use the ruler option in Photoshop, (and I'm guessing GIMP) and that should do nicely.

Is that Yasuo? lol

project yasou from league of legends,

Hi Kenosis
im aware people don't hand draw shps any more, im just beginning to learn blender, but spending an hour on blender compared to to an hour of sketches then scanning then gimping is more enjoyable for an activity. as it expands a multitude of skills, none of these will see the light of public release anyway and is merely an activity to expand my skills and knowledge.

Well if this was done in blender, I'd grab the template that was made for RA2, because this is rendered in the wrong perspective and it would help to learn from that template how isometrics work.

This looks really good,
but in the past many attempts in hand drawing SHPs were made, but almost none really finished. Simply because drawing 1000 frames and more by hand is just crazy.
And when you do a mistake in the shape/model/size, you can start all over again.

Working in 3D is the only way to get such a job finished in a reasonable way, without going crazy.

100% agree the whole process of doing this has made me come to that conclusion myself even before posting this thread.but once i set myself a task i will finish it.i'm learning blender atm but its just so boring. the keyboard shortcuts detract from any learning experience gained, and i have to start all over again with the learning processs.

is there any other free 3d modeling software that doesnt rely on endless keyboard shortcuts more convoluted than C&C 3 storyline?. the art work and practising drawing in hand and on gimp is part of 5 year plan, hopefully a comic book will come out of it.

ps attached are my attempts at reproducing the above images in blender.its  my first WIP model. haven't even researched how to sort out camera and sizeing yet, just learning the basic principles currently.

my windows media player is getting a sound error on those videos, but dont i need to pay for 3dsmax or download it from a dubious site. or are your scripts 3dsmax plugins for blender, as ive stated above im immensely new to 3d modelling and am much more comfortable in traditional art, drawings sketches. just beginning to grasp all the concepts in regards to blender and its inner workings , so if i sound stupid forgive me.

Your artistic sense will have to be tweaked somewhat, once a drawing is converted into pixel art, sometimes nice details and correct proportions actually look wrong.

I'm sure you've seen by now some of the original WW infantry models with giant heads...

yeah. your right. already knew that lots of detail is lost, the main aim was to get the hang of the isometric views and an internal  sense about it, i find by doing it and leaning by making mistakes, (essentially learning the hard way) allowing for me to learn, i while im still working on this, ive learnt that all my shp work that is done on gimp has to be based on overlays of the WW vanilla infantry. for that natural shp feel. currently compiling a massive "doodad" gimp master file with all of the Vanilla Shps and a few of my favourite public shps reconstructed into separate parts and pieces.to learn from interns of isometric images and angles. which is is so much effort that its made me learn abit more blender.in my bored moments. the problem with the OP image is his unusaul stance i couldnt find existing CIV3 units or C&C units to base him off. in the meantime ive finished a wip of yasou with lazy duplicate run frames with a hastely hand drawn unfinished) rocket boots animation, my patience was thin and i just wanted him ingame already.

oh i just noticed ive bloody converted it in the wrong fricking colour.*Sigh*, i apparntly have some sort of aversion to the south east frames , i consider them very bad.
