Subject description: Generals Conversion, RA2 sized

RPG Trooper conversion from Generals.  Includes stand, run, idle A, idle B, die A, die B, fire, and cheer frames.  Does not include shadows or crawl frames.  Per LKO's suggestion, I made the model shorter in GMax to make it fit in more with the Ra2 infantry.

Next up will be Jarmen Kell

EDIT 2/19/2020: I have added a version with shadows

The big and flat feet look like he's wearing flippers.

Without shadow frames it's pretty incomplete and not very usable ingame. Before starting another infantry you should finish this one first.

The colors are really bad on this. The RPG launcher is overly shiny looking, too many colors were converted to dark blue, and I haven't downloaded but I have a feeling too many of those Reds aren't remappable. GMax is very much hampering you in this.

1) I didn't really think to try to edit the models since I was going for conversion, but going forward I could add a few edits to fix some of the flatness.

2) I recognize I need to figure out shadows.  I'm wondering if there's an easy way to do it in gmax (which doesn't support rendering).  Maybe clone the middle with anim, make scale it to 1% height, color it black (or pink) and rotate it to be proper shadow angle?

3) I think the colors are better in the actual shp than the gif preview.  I could be wrong, but I don't recall seeing the dark blues in OS SHP builder.

4) I agree gmax is less than ideal.  I can export to obj, which keeps models with textures, but not anims.  That good news for the structures, I'll be able to get them into blender.

There is one at least for max 7 and 8, and I think it has been expanded to support the newer versions not so long ago.

The latest version of the script works up to 3DS Max 10 IIRC.

I can give 3ds Max a try since it has a 30 day free trial, but I'm not paying for it.  If there are scripts that automate the rendering, that would save me time and maybe I could crank out most of the Generals infantry in the 30 day window (about 20 infantry).  I only have maybe an hour every other night or so to work on this stuff.  I experimented with drawing a small circle in the shadow frame at the units feet which kinda works, better than nothing until I get a proper shadow going.

I've been able to get models with textures out of GMax into Blender, so that's great news especially since most of the USA/GLA structures need to be re-textured.

I have a .edu mailbox.
Where do I click? Can I open MadHQ's 3D Max 2013 stuff with it?

Here's Jarmen Kell, again with no shadow.  Now that I finished him, I'm going to try to add some shadows to the RPG Trooper

I for one welcome not bulky infantry. In fact "ra2style" infantry should be redone in "tall and lanky" way

Can we have the high one for download?

Plus is the short one, the proportions are noticeable wrong to the eye. The original Ra2 models weren't "2d shortened", rather their 3d limbs were  "stuffed".

I resized the model in gmax, not in paint.  I can share my method with you if you'd like to convert the infantry to your liking.  Making a tall and a short version doubles the work, and I'd rather have something that kinda fits in with the YR stuff.  I'm making a "big" one for each, so you could always resize those to the desired dimension.

I think I have a method to make "fake" shadows.  Flip every frame, convert to monochrome, color replace to shadow color, resize height by 33%, resize canvas to original dimension.  Convert shadows ra2->ts, export to images.  Then splice with the original shp, and convert back to ra2 shadows.  Fix a few pixels here and there.  The shadows aren't correct, but it's something.

I should be updating the RPG download soon with shadows, plus uploading Jarmen Kell, and the Hijacker is close.
