In FA, it says that anything over 512 will cause trouble.
I don't know what ''512'' means but when I try to create a map that's 400 by 400 I get the bigger than 512 error message.

I thought that 512 is the biggest so why do I get and error when making it only 400 ?

Also, what is the biggest map possible ?

Maximum the game supports is width + height = 512. Game doesn't support 400x400 (400+400=800) as it exceeds total W+H of 512.

I suppose you are using the patched FA2, where the limit is extended from 200 to 511 per width or height. But minimum is limited to 20, so you can have like 492x20.

For maximum number of cells, you can have a map like 208x209 that FA2 supports without crashing.

Further you can extend the outer boundary to maximum that game supports like 256x256 by using MapResize tool. But you won't be able to open such maps in FA2 but will work in game.

Really!? 208x209 works in normal FA2 and YR... Challenge accepted....

Pathfinding will be the biggest hassle, units will just get stuck and not move if their order requires more than X turns, and that's assuming you don't have crashes from unresolvable collisions during large army moves through obstacles.

In other words, on a mostly water map you should be fine, but an overly densely detailed land map will have to take great care in leaving clear paths from points of interest.

Jeez that's a bummer.
And here I was hoping for some Supreme Commander size maps.

You can't give orders to more than 128 units at once in RA2, probably also goes for TS and prior, anyways.

Although, if you were to use Ctrl+number teams, you can easily command 1280 at once.
Good luck finding a map though that financially allows such an army.
