i have always wondered how it is that red alert 2 mods, and even ares, demand that users have at least an .exe file from
some copy of the base game, while simultaneously XWIS has had a free-to-download working copy of RA2 and YR complete
with .exe and all available for somthing like a whole decade with the stipulation that the XWIS version contains none of the
single player content from either game. one would think that if the literal base game can be downloaded for free, then mods
could build off of that free download without evoking some kind of phantom copyright issue, of course assuming that they dont
add back in any of the original single player content.

has anyone ever checked the legality of doing so? the pain in the ass associated with getting ra2 mods running is bottlenecking
the potential playerbase horribly, and standalone installations would remove that bottleneck

XWIS took over for WoL, as part of that, they were allowed to generate CD keys for the purposes of multiplayer, they didn't get the rights to the game itself, but of course the base game needed to be modified to do this, so I think that's the compromise.

hmm i didnt know that. in that case, i wonder if there would be any
qualms about distributing modified copies of these installations or not.

ill send an email to olaf and see if i can learn anything more about it.
