This would be a great explosion for an oil storage facility, those big round white tanks you see near refineries.

exactly the same. This isn't a VXL that gets rendered with some obscure VPL.
What you see here is what you get ingame.

However the anim should be scaled down to 50%. The size of the inner details makes this one appear much closer to the camera than any other object ingame.
The box in which the flame/smoke is generated seems to be a bit too small. The anim is partially cut off in the SW and SE border.

None the less, the effect is very well done. What was used to generate this flame and smoke anim?

Can this be made to work with original RA2YR ?
The colors are definitely compatible with anim.pal but a conversion will keep a black area below it.

yeah. you should be able to do it by simply exporting the frames, recoloring the mask color into magenta and importing and saving as a new shp file

I had some attempts to do the conversion without success.
The below area has many different RGB values, I could not mass-replace it with a color replace.

I found the option in SHP builder at the first test it's not looking good when converted. I'll do more testing with various options.

Apparently it converts well but when saved I get blueish colors instead.

Anyone managed to successfully convert this to standard anim palette ?

I really don't want to do it frame by frame if possible.

I opened it in SHP Builder, used the colour replace tool to do a full pal conversion & then used it again to fix a few individual blue spots in the smoke near the end. Took a grand total of about 2 minutes of work, less time then it took me to make the gif preview...
