DO NOT WATCH:
- Among the Living

WATCH IF BORED:
- Deus: The Dark Sphere
- The Red Book Rituals
- The Runner
- The Innocents (NO)

WATCH:
- Emily the Criminal
- Three Thousand Years of Longing
- The Enforcer
- Bandit
- Bullet Train

I'd note that Deus started out interesting, it had a lot of the usual space exploration vibes, but it fell flat for me. It was like Event Horizon, but if Hell was replaced by a Hoax. The drama and most of the plot was actually quite subdued, and all of it felt lacking any sort of weight. All the fundamental questions posed by the story were glossed over, and the big internal debates were no more significant than a mild headache.

By contrast, Emily was a decent movie that was also slow, for the simple reason that all the drama seemed to matter, all the challenges were looming, all the failures immediate. Even with such a simple story, and sedate acting, it was still engaging, even unpredictable at times.

TTYoL kinda makes the list, they did inject some woke crap and the usual tropes of accusing white people of shit, they even had a couple scenes with Tilda wearing a face diaper hah! It was more an interesting movie than a good movie.

Been a while since I added anything here, I won't remember them all but...

WATCH:
Tetris
Avatar 2
The Pale Blue Eye
M3gan

Still under "watch" but kind of a slow roll, interesting/psychological:

Glorious
Memory of Water
Pokerface
The Old Way
Inside

WATCH IF BORED (aka low expectations):
The Artifice Girl
Antman 3
Devotion
Jung_e (KR)

DO NOT WATCH:
The Last Heist

Finally catching up on movies...

WATCH:
Reptile
Gran Turismo
The Moon (KR)
Equalizer 3
Hypnotic
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning
Sympathy for the Devil

WATCHINGS OF BOREDOM:
Confidential Informant
No One Will Save You
Pain Hustlers

STRAIGHT TO TRASH:
57 Seconds

Caveat: Pain Hustlers is a marginal case, it's like a poor man's Wolf of Wall st. not bad by any means and has good moments. It's failing is that it just isn't fulfilling, with no real climax. I liked it overall, but it's entirely forgetable.

Not so many new ones this time, catching up on some older films I missed in between, but as I stated in the beginning, this is for relatively new movies. I figure a rolling 3yrs is a good cutoff.

WATCH:
The Creator
The Killer
The Empty Man
The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Dream Scenario
Oppenheimer (just barely makes the list)
The Burial (just barely makes the list)

WATCH IF BORED:
Expendables 4
Silent Night

WATCH:
American Star
Saltburn
Lord of Misrule

BORED:
Rebel Moon, Part 1
The Bricklayer
I.S.S.

DO NOT:
Ferrari

I do want to make a comment about Rebel Moon, it feels like watching video game cutscenes most of the time, with some scenes feeling more like a high quality TV episode. The acting was bland, and the cinematics were frankly terrible; they made everything feel small and personal, all the shots zoomed into just the main character, so you couldn't even get a sense of how large a room is usually. Plus the protaginist girl seems to be in 70% of the shots as the central focus, making the other 6 main characters more like cameos. I won't even get started on the invincible girl-boss trope going on....

So I haven't posted any reviews lately, I haven't watched many recent films lately, but this week I slipped a few in....

WATCH:
Damaged
Dune, Part 2
Sleeping Dogs
Gold (2022)

Tentatively on the WATCH list:
Godzilla Minus One -- acting is weak but well made

Watch-if-bored:
Restore Point (CZ)
Arcadian -- it's just a worse "A Quiet Place" knockoff...
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Darkness of Man

Do-not list is empty today, yay!

Today's list is in a weird categoty between WATCH-IF-BORED as in you'd never to out of your way for it, and WATCH as in you'd thoroughly enjoy it.

ARMOR - not terribly objectionable, waste of talent, nothing happens
VENOM The Last Dance - 1/3 repetitive/derivative, 1/3 nostalgia, 1/3 cringe and boring
SLINGSHOT - interesting, but nothing much happens except flashbacks
TRANSFORMERS ONE - breaks the live action movies canon (if there is any?), rather childish and uninspired

I don't think I could recommend any of them.

This one is going to have caveats...

WATCH:
Gladiator 2
Dirty Angels
Den of Thieves: Pantera
The Gorge*
Old Guy

WATCH BORED:
Project Wolf Hunting (KR)
Die Alone**
The Brutalist***
Flight Risk
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

DO NOT:
Werewolves
Levels

--------

* Has an excellent first half, the rest is literal nonsense, think of it like a Doom playthrough.
** Interesting premise, but boring and predictable, with repetitive exposition.
*** Interesting but lacks a climax or even point, just a string of well acted scenes.

WATCH:
- Superman
- F1 the movie
- Ballerina
- Black Bag

WATCH-IF-BORED:
- 28 Years Later

DO NOT WATCH:
- Osiris

I do want to mention I enjoy horror movies, and I wanted to like 28 years later, but the structuring of the movie made it so annoying in the first half. It has these scene jumps to historical events, and other jumps to contemporary events to keep you abreast of happenings.

It's like a visual version of exposition dialogue, but impossible to ignore. It breaks up otherwise reasonable story telling, almost like someone explaining a metaphor to you 13 times. There are other flaws with the movie, but like I say, I can't recommend watching for the uncomfortable experience.

Hmmm. All the nice ones i've watched or rewatched recently.

Films:
- the new Dune (10/10)
- Dune part 2 (9/10)
- venom the last dance (9/10)
- john wick 4 (all of them rly) (9+/10)
- red one (9-/10)
- gravity (9-/10)
- control zeta (8+/10)
- in the lost lands (8-/10), yeah widely regarded as total crap, i've enjoyed it despite an absurd plot and cliché characters
- oppenheimer (9-/10)
- kick-ass (10-/10)
- IT, IT Chapter Two (10/10)
- the hobbit 1-3 EXTENDED version (10+/10) for the faithful not the diaper edition for cinema goers
- sicario (10/10)
- enemigos (10+/10)
- the belko experiment (8+/10)
- Hellboy (the 1st reboot) (9/10)
- masters of the universe, lol (9+/10)
- E.L.E a short sci-film experiment (8-/10)
- The Departed (10+/10)

Shows including the freshest seasons:
- Dune: Prophecy (10-/10)
- Defiance (10/10)
- Twisted Metal (10/10)
- the wheel of time (10/10)
- the penguin (10/10)
- The Boys (10+/10)
- Gen V (9+/10)
- good omens (9-/10)
- goliath (9-/10) very strange and trippy, still interesting to watch as filler
- bosch (10/10), ballard (9-/10)
- the legend of vox machina (9+/10)
- Lore (9-/10)
- The Continental (8-/10)
- those about to die (9-/10)
- the newest rings of power, okayish
- countdown (9-/10)
- shameless us version (9+/10), only last two seasons are crap
- fallout (10/10)
- the legend of el cid (9-/10)
- The Man in the High Castle (10+/10)

Meh: Kraven the Hunter, Beetlejuice, Folie a Deux, House of David, Nocturne, and so on. The War of the Rohirrim with reheated dialogue is just horrible, I regret watching it - Vinland Saga is a far better substitute even if you dislike anime but want to see something brutal and cool, not that rohirrim turd.

Gladiator 2 also half meh. 8-/10.

And damn. They murdered so many sci-fi/fantasy shows over the years... rip Carnival Row, Defiance, and many others...

Well I was trying to restrain this thread to let's say the last couple of years of movie releases people might have missed, and the latest stuff people haven't gotten to.... but I must say you give a lot of 9-10 ratings suspiciously.

The general idea is to categorize films into what you'd feel happy to have watched, versus ambivalent, versus downright disappointed or disgusted to have wasted time on. It's not so much a rating as a level of entertainment. There are often cases where a movie that is technically bad can redeem itself with humour, or some huge budget epic with a stupid premise that is hard to enjoy.

The watch-if-bored category is reserved for movies you'd watch at midnight when there's nothing else to do. Not soul-sucking bad, often fairly decent, but not something you'd come away from with a grin. In many cases they are just forgettable slop that doesn't do anything particularly wrong.

WATCH:
- The Astronaut
- Play Dirty
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- Weapons
- Air
- Sisu

WATCH BORED:
- The Cut

Those 9's and 10's are there because I don't list anything here below my 8's... stuff exactly like kraven/beetlejuice, Carrie, War of the Worlds, etc. Seen quite a crop of crap lately, I'm just choosing to list the nicest ones.

Hm. I forgot to mention The Pickup (8+/10) and the Domestics (9-/10). Slipped my mind.

Well to me 8/10 or higher should be considered good to great, 5-7 being boring to average, and anything below 5 being shitty. Anything in the fifth quintile can't be "crap" by its very rating.
