(Thanks ME Vault) It's official, folks: Electronic Arts is working on the Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth 2. Here's their official press release about it:

"REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2005--Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) today announced that it has been granted the rights to develop games based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic literary fiction, The Lord of the Rings. Since 2001, EA has developed games based exclusively on New Line's Academy Award winning theatrical productions of The Lord of the Rings, as depicted by Peter Jackson. The expansion of the rights allows EA to introduce players to depths of the fiction never before explored in an EA game. The company also revealed today the first details of two new games in the blockbuster The Lord of the Rings series; The Lord of the Rings(TM), The Battle for Middle-earth(TM) II and The Lord of the Rings(TM) Tactics (working title). With the new games, fans will be able to step into a world that looks like the films, but experience characters, environments and battles that have been inspired by the books.

The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II is the next PC installment to EA's blockbuster The Lord of the Rings(TM) series of video games. The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Real-time Strategy (RTS) game from EA Los Angeles, The Lord of the Rings(TM), The Battle for Middle-earth(TM). The newest The Lord of the Rings PC title will introduce players to depths of the fiction never before explored by EA, in accordance with an agreement with The Saul Zaentz Company d/b/a Tolkien Enterprises that grants EA the rights to develop games based on the books, in addition to a separate agreement that allows for games based on the New Line films. Expanding on The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth, the new RTS game will allow players to engage in heated battles with Elven and Dwarven armies plus heroes and creatures that have never been seen in a The Lord of the Rings film.

"The new rights have unlocked the world of Middle-earth for The Lord of the Rings and strategy game fans alike. We're building a deeper, richer, bigger game based on the #1 RTS from the previous holiday season in North America with new fantasy races, places, heroes, and battles from both the books and films," said Mike Verdu, Senior Producer of The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth at EA.

For more information about The Lord of the Rings(TM), The Battle for Middle-earth(TM) II please visit: www.bfme2.ea.com. For information about all of EA's games, please visit EA's press site at www.info.ea.com."

And do you still wonder why so many of their staff who used to work on RA3 left? Now you have the official answer.

Whaaat? They stopped here? Why? It would've been fun to see the prequels to NOD/GDI units! I mean, They left the story with a HUGE hole in it! My guess is it's now up to the modders to make a mod that connects the red alert series with the tiberian series.

I never played the first Battle for Middle Earth, so maybe I'll jump straight to this one, seeing as it can't be a true sequel without making things up...
(*narrator's voice: Although Frodo did save Middle Earth, peace only lasted for 5 days. Then all the Orcs that didn't fall into the abyss outside the Black Gate returned...*)
So, I would hope it's more like a rehash of the first with an even better rendition of the SAGE engine or even a brand new, better engine.

On the other hand, the fact that they're not making either CnC3/TT or RA3 does annoy me enough that I'll probably have to slap myself after paying for this game. I really wanted to see another "true" (I.E. close as EA can get) Command and Conquer game.

i realy think that if EA have stoped this that should give the rights back to the old westwood guy at that new company and let them continue to CnC series.

I've heard rumours that there are 2 RTS teams at EALA. One of them is with BfME 2 and the other? RA3? Don't loose your hope yet Wink.

I think the chances that EA will give the rights to Petroglyph is extremely slim...

Though, if Petroglyph DID get the rights, they'd do a wonderful job! I mean, take star wars:Empire at War for instance! (see: http://www.lucasarts.com/games/swempireatwar/indexFlash.html#Gallery.Trailers)

i have Sad i dont want to see an other RA, its pointless to make an other one.
it would make more sence to make TT.
but i think the CnC series is dead.

U all better buy Star Wars: Empire at War. so Petroglyph can start the next gen of RTS games.

There has been no word on the next CnC being dropped, and it was pretty much officially confirmed by Louis Castle. The C&C fanbase is among the most naive I have ever seen. I mean, just look at the reactions on EA publishing HL2. zomg valve is teh doomed!!!11!

Petroglyph will no longer work in a C&C game. Give up. The best they could do is to work on a similar, but don't expect that either. They have business with Lucas Arts, so they'll be making some Star Wars games for a while.

Who gives a shit, really?! RA3 would just ztype the storyline up more, and drag more modders away in its vile claws. BFME2's going to have more plotholes then RA2,though,and piss off ALOT of true LOTR fans.

Frodo VS Yuri

In truth EA are a bunch of #)$*&%@ they call themselves "Electronic Arts" yet they don't know the meaning of the word "Art".

To be honest I like EA's Games (especially Need For Speed Series; Underground 2 pwns!), but I don`t like what they're doing to some companies. They destroyed Westwood (so no wonder the CnC series is done). They also plan to destroy other companies (Eidos, etc.). Now it isn`t fair what they're doing.
Red Alert 3? To hell with it. It has nothing to do with the original series, same for RA2/YR (I finnally agree with this fact).

Pah... there's not much to do next with LOTR without making stuff up, as someone said..

LOTR ended with the Return the King: the Ring was melted, the King returned, & Sam got married, & it just obviously finished..

They could go back & do The Hobbit, but that's just plain silly..

*wishes for a LOTR mod for Diablo II*

DAMMIT! I want Tiberian Twilight!!!..... I remember this one fansite that had to do with TT. I think it was called Tiberian Twilight, generals failure or somthin. That was great site. The site was about what the guy how made the site thought should be in TT. He had some really neat Ideas, like Nod has all underground bases, and there was the Scrin, and  Cabal (With Kane), and so on. Don't know what happened to the site.
