Rant of the day: The old C&C sites.
I think that in almost five years of PPM, this is probably the first rant I am posting in the news, but as a webmaster of a site that cares and has a community based on old C&C sites, I don't think I have to let this one pass...
In order to support the C&C 10th Anniversary celebrations, which is a great event, EA did their part by making a section about it in the Generals site, which a special interview from Louis Castle, words from some staff involved on C&C projects about what comes in their mind when they thought about C&C and the list of events happening on community sites. They've also sent prize packs for few lucky webmasters (which includes myself) to sponsor the events promoted by the community for the celebration.
In order to bring the attention of the C&C fans for the event, they have redirected all pre-Generals C&C sites and Westwood.com straight to the Generals site, so visitors could see the banner and, consequently, know about the events.
However, it is a bad move. With no site, these games now looks like abandonwares. No information about the game, the patch and whatever files related with these games are only officially available in the Westwood Public FTP which is not mentioned by the Generals site. The support for these games is now even more hidden, although if you head yourself to www.redalert3.com you can still reach the old C&C section of EA. I know the Generals site has a support link, but will any user think of that when looking for Tiberian Sun or any other 'ancients*' support? And I don't need to mention that the lastest news in the Generals news section is about the Zero Hour 1.03 patch, which old and the patches section only links the north american 1.04 patch. The others you have to use your brillant mind to solve the hidden puzzle to finally find out that the patches for the other languages are HERE!
So, to celebrate the C&C 10th Anniversary, do they need to kill the game? This really saddens me.
But instead of just ranting, we need to come with a solution. And my suggestion would be to bring these sites back and, in each site, post a news or a banner from the C&C 10th Anniversary linking to its section in the Generals site. With this solution, C&C games will still have their homes and visitors will check the C&C 10th Anniversary.
There is time to fix it... or maybe this redirection is temporary, but the community can't simply be quiet for this kind of thing. We want to celebrate the 10 years of Command & Conquer, instead of killing it.
(A small reminder: guests may post comments here)
* term previously used by Apoc to mention the games pre-Red Alert 2.
A third note: If you come to This Place, you can still reach the sites from the old C&C games. Last edited by Banshee on Mon Sep 05, 2005 1:26 am; edited 2 times in total QUICK_EDIT

I dont think he would give a shit. EA's killed another franchise. Like Rare's 007 franchise.(Remember those four-player fragfests on Goldeneye? Golden guns only? how fun that was? EA killed that. C&C? EA killed that, too.) Good job, EA. I must wonder what excuse they have planned, though. _________________ PPM's Reichstrollfuherer, 236th Trollenparties brigade. QUICK_EDIT
Don't you see what they have done? They are a business, and think like a business, theres a big community event going on to celebrate 10 years of a franchise, this is their way of cashing in on it. They redirect all the old sites to the generals site, which is still on sale and available in store shelves, and they still can make money from.... QUICK_EDIT
Like I said in the other thread. To celebrate the anniversary, they dug up the corpse -_-
I won't even get deeply into the fact that gave 10 webmasters one of the most "out there" C&C games. If they passed out copies of Sole Survivor (they must have 10 left, and the game is no more than a trophy piece these days.. a perfect give-out!!) or C&C music CDs, I could understand. But RA2, which came out less than half a decade ago...
I dunno, man. I think EA has tried to jump on the bandwagon, take credit for events WE organized by 'sponsoring' them, and while our backs are turned... like I said, dig up the bodies... _________________

QUICK_EDIT

They still sell a package with C&C 95, RA1, TS and RA2. I don't think Renegade is included. Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2 and Renegade are periodically sold as 'classics' on cheap boxes. They do not sell the expansions.

According to Apoc, the prize pack includes C&C Soundtrack CDs. I still couldn't verify, since it will probably arrive here tomorrow or on tuesday.

Actually, they stated that CNCNZ were the ones to organize the C&C 10th Anniversary, which is true, since CnC King is directing it. And they credited each C&C site for the event they are organizing. So, I do not see anything wrong in this part. _________________

As long as we play, CNC lives on.
As long as 1 free-host CNC fansite remains, CNC lives on.
As long as the CD's remain on our shelves, CNC lives on.
As long as GDI fight Nod, CNC lives on.
As long as the Soviets attack the Allies, CNC lives on.
As long as we remember, CNC lives on.
It'll be in 20 years time, I'll be bored to hell in a 9-5 office job, but I'll never forget some of the incredible thrashings I've had online with TS.
I couldn't afford CNC when it first came out. But I got my hands on a demo of it, and I played that disk solid. 3 missions, but I played them inside out. It was a while before I finally got the game, and I completed it so quick, because of living off that demo. CNC laid the way for pretty much all the other RTS games, with style and class, to which I am sure some still believe are unbeaten.
I love CNC, and there is no other game in my mind which comes close to it. Tiberian Sun for me, is the ultimate. The game, the tiberian world. Tiberium is the way, and the life, and it always will be.
As long as I'm still around, CNC lives on.
And I'd like to say the same applies to everyone else here, I'm sure.
The site is gone, but the game isn't dead, and neither is the community. Between us, we have everything that was there, and more. We just need to work together to rebuild what has been taken away. _________________ If there is a problem on the forums, PM me. QUICK_EDIT
To be honest, I don`t think their site is important. They hardly give a shit for ye old and antique C&C games. As long as we know their ftp (that I'm sure it will be erased) we can get what we need for our C&C series games. The forums and the modding sites are for visiting, not WW's site. QUICK_EDIT
I agree with Banshee here, they've basically killed off the WW sites and linked it to Generals (which is NOT even a proper C&C) but Muldrake also has a point there. Long Live C&C! _________________ Apocalypse is rolling in! QUICK_EDIT

Funny how you say this. Microsoft still has the ORIGINAL Age Of Empires website online. Atleast Microsoft gaming studios gives a ztype about customers. not EA. Maybe they'll buy EA out for gods sakes. You know? I'd love that. We'd see C&C again if MS did, so they could still compete with Blizzard. And MS listens to the fans for god's sakes. _________________ PPM's Reichstrollfuherer, 236th Trollenparties brigade. QUICK_EDIT

Are you suggesting, someone should actualy remake or use old archived versions of the C&C websites, and host them?

I thought Rare was bought out by Microsoft, ie thats why they are making games for the Xbox 360. _________________

Yea, Rare left Nintendo due to a 'disagreement'. Mostly over Conker's Bad Fur Day.(Nintendo did little if any marketing for C:BFD.) They joined MS willingly...as MS supports Conker. _________________ PPM's Reichstrollfuherer, 236th Trollenparties brigade. QUICK_EDIT

Since when has that been on the shelves?
They have one with Tiberian Sun, Firestorm, Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge, and Renegade. AND a demo of Generals. Yeah, that adds a LOT.
It's sold in an orange box. With lot's of prerelease images. Of every game. The CDs are in a large four CD case. And the Expansions are in white sleeves.

Carno's right, they're sill patching Halo!
I managed to snatch a "Black Box" version of the C&C games kit, so, the orange wasn't the only one on the market, Tyler. _________________ ... QUICK_EDIT
As long as we fight on the ground sea and air... with all these fine mods that we have right here... EA will surely attempt a big profit... will shut down the classics and never come offit... but if we still use mammoths to blow stuff sky-high... and fly orcas high in the sky... c&c will keep going... never say die. BTW, to finish off what banshee started this topic with...I TOLD YOU ALL EA HAD SOMETHING UP THEIR SLEEVES...Now didn't I? >> _________________ ... QUICK_EDIT

8.6. Final note from the C&C/RA design team
We all enjoyed making "The Aftermath", especially in creating and
implementing the new units into the game. We hope you have as much
fun using them as we do!
Also, a general "thank you!" to all the fans and supporters of the
Command & Conquer line of games. Thank you for all your comments,
suggestions (yes, we do read them!) and input over the course of
our games. You won't believe what we've got in store for you in the
future!
- C&C/RA Design Team, Las Vegas, September 1997.
You're welcome guys. You're welcome. Too bad you didn't see what EA had in store for you. A little off topic but it's a little cheerier than what I've posted recently =) QUICK_EDIT
What would be the ultimate dream is if all people who worked at Westwood before it was consolidated joined Petroglyph, EA sold the rights to Petroglyph, they changed their name back to Westwood (together with the logo and everything) and continued work on C&C3, Renegade 2 and Continuum.... That is not at all likely to happen though... I'm not even sure if we'll get a new C&C game =(
It's about time EA decided to make games, and not only 'products'. _________________
