Urgent!!! We want YOU for the C&C modding army!
Since 2002, when Renegade was released, GMAX has been the only tool available in the world with an exporter for W3D files, the 3D models used on Renegade and Generals (and also on Battle For Middle Earth). So, GMAX is the only tool used by Renegade and Generals modders to create graphics for their mods.
Mods as we see today for Renegade and Generals will end, because GMAX is officially being killed.
To explain better this situation: here's the official words from TurboSquid guys:
Quote:
Since Turbo Squid is a valuable partner for Autodesk and we've been managing the product and community on their behalf for the past year, they've allowed us to continue to offer the Gmax download until November 1st so that we can effectively manage the transition for this now defunct product. At that point, the ability to download Gmax from our site will be removed as will the ability for users to get authorization codes for the product.
This means that no one will be able to install GMAX on their machines anymore!!! So, newbies won't be able to create new graphics for the game! Isn't it an absurd?
Of course, we cannot allow it to happen! As true Command & Conquer fans, we cannot allow this tragedy to happen!
According to one of the TurboSquid staff, the reasons for the end of GMAX is:
Quote:
One of the arguments I have heard before and I think Autodesk repeated it, is that for the past 2 years, no new gamepacks had been created on the game company sides. So this means no money for Autodesk. Also, GMAX is very costly to maintain on the developement side (it is 3d max 4.X based and we are at 3d max 8 now !).
I don't think they would really pay a single cent to leave few php scripts (or whatever language they us) in their server that is used to autorize the client to use the product. Let's be honest. Even PPM doesn't represent an aditional cost to Revora (owner of our server), except for the domain ppmsite.com that costs about $10 a year. So, in short, stupid excuse!
So, to stop this situation, first of all, we need to show that the Command & Conquer community is still strong and is really, really unhappy with this situation. Register on TurboSquid (free, fast and spam-less if you cut all newsletter options) and put your voice on this topic.
Let's everyone support Mad Ivan (Mad6822 @ TurboSquid) and save W3D modding! QUICK_EDIT
What???? gmax will be exterminated!!!!!! Man, this sux. So, I'll have to back-up gmax's registries? Damn. Oh well, who can save us? Crackers... QUICK_EDIT
An alpha version of 3D Canvas v7 is set to be released this November, and, according to its creator, it has the functionality built in (But asleep, so to speak) to replace gmax. _________________
talking bout 3ds max... I'm totally unaware of 3d graphic formats, but since gmax bases (or soon: based...) on an old 3ds max version isn't it possible for some experts to write plugins for it?
Or a 3ds <-> w3d converter? QUICK_EDIT
Hmm... I found some activation cracks for gmax... If gmax would have been included in 3ds max 8...
They are 2 reg files made for people that dont have internet .
They can include it in 3DS All they want, but imagine a newbie registering at DeeZire.net, asking for a 3D Modeling Software for BFME2 and everybody say "Use BitTorrent to download 3CDs of modeling software with cracking instructions for rocket scientists and then simply install gmax, download the Renegade Tools and install them. Now you can model BFME2 ".I`ll tell ya - he won`t be arround for a long time

There is one man from the community that has them...but we have a better chance of making our own then asking him...
We need the source code (or something like that) of the W3D Plugins for gMax, then we need a programmer to reprogram them for 3DS 8.The programmer has to know MaxScript among a programming language.

These banners would be good, if those who saw them found out that it is related with the end of GMAX. So, you'd better re-think the text. _________________

I can setup a forum here too or we can discuss it in the webbies, which should be a better idea, since we'll have support from other webmasters. _________________
