My Christmas gift for PPM (a bit late, ok, move if needed)
I got an idea:
Imagine: You just bought TS (for example). You play it a lot and you like it very much. But you want to change some stuff. Exactly, you want to mod it! But how do you mod? What do you need for it? A tutorial that says step by step what to do would be very good in this case. I.e.: a tutorial how to put normals on voxels, make cameo’s, etc… Everything important. But such a tutorial doesn’t exist! So this is my idea. Write such a tutorial.
It is very good for PPM because:
We will be the first with such a set of tutorials
It will prevent that beginning modders ask 1000 times the same question
I want to write such a tutorial for:
TS
RA2
Generals
But I need your help:
Experienced modders can help me writing the tutorial and can give some useful tips.
You know I suck on spelling. Somebody that wants to correct my spelling would be nice.
Finally, I need the admins. It would really be helpful to have a staff forum, and maybe a separate sub forum in the TS tutorials forum for the finished work.
This would not be complete without an example: I’ll write my introduction down here.
Note:italics are remarks.

Hello! My name is Sevelys and I welcome you to both PPM and modding! I am not an admin, neither a moderator (not yet…), but I wrote some tutorials, like this one!
You probably came to PPM because you want to learn how to mod. Modding is a little bit difficult, but once you know how to do it, it will be much easier. This is a tutorial about TS (or RA2 or Generals) modding. Once you finished the tutorial, it wouldn’t be anymore that difficult.
We, at PPM also have our rules. When you respect them, you can become a great member, and also a great modder. But when you ignore them, you will get banned soon.
Here are the rules :
insert rules here
Now we continue modding. The tutorial is divided in these parts:
Easy-on start
insert here subtitles
Moderate modding
insert here subtitles
Hard coded stuff
insert here subtitles these all have links to the tutorials
So, let’s get started with a easy-on start on the modding!
>>CONTINUE>>put a link here to first tutorial

Well, if you ask me, I could have REALLY used something like this when I first came here. Instead, I observed every goddamn thing about modding.
Oh yeah, and you should add one more thing to that tutorial: "DON'T USE TIBED, ASSHOLE!!!" _________________ Destroy to create. All for the hunt to dominate!
Is that all?
Oh, yes, that was just my introduction. In the tutorial about rules.ini modding i'll write it. "Whatever happens, do NOT use tibed or sunedit2k. This gives only mayor bugs. Instead, use notepad"
BTW, quote thing fixed. _________________ I use a Unix-based system, that means I'll get laid as often as I have to reboot. QUICK_EDIT

The only gift you could give that I would enjoy would be your perminant banishment to hell. _________________ PPM's Reichstrollfuherer, 236th Trollenparties brigade. QUICK_EDIT
I don't want to insult, but...
Carnoharvesterlola, (or however?)
Just when I think, "Surely this person has reached and encapsulates the limits of Internet tedium" you go and push the boundary even further. Rumor has it that you are almost incomprehensible in person (as revealed by your desperate urge to babble nonsensically on message boards.) No doubt, this rumor is true.
It's just as well you can type, for if you had to speak your mind, you'd be speechless. Are you always this ignorant, or are you making a special effort today? However, I'll consider letting you have the last word if you guarantee it will be your last. How true is Stanislaw J. Lec's famous remark: "Every now and then you meet someone whose ignorance is encyclopedic."
I'm busy trying to imagine you with a personality. Maybe you'd be less boring once I got to know you, but I don't want to take that chance. You are nastier than a five-dollar whore getting a shit enema. You're a waste of time, space, air, flesh, and the rectum you were born from, retard. Maybe you wouldn't read like such a pathetic loser if you'd had enough oxygen at birth; if the chief excitement in your meaningless life wasn't spotting people who are fatter than you are, or if you didn't have a face so ugly that your Psychiatrist makes you lie face down. Nah, of course you would.
In closing, why don't you put your glasses on backwards and walk into yourself? _________________ I use a Unix-based system, that means I'll get laid as often as I have to reboot. QUICK_EDIT
about the tutorial: I'd say it's a nice idea, it could be put in the Tiberian Sun -section at the main menu. So that every new visitor could see it before they register and start asking those stupid questions....when I, myself, came here the first time, I watched the topics in this forum, check the news, and I learn many great things about modding. I didn't register in here until the 3rd OMC (I had been unregistered almost 3 months), but when I did, I had learn many important things about modding, so I wasn't very :n00b:ish when I first came here....I think _________________
Congrats, you just proved that a tiger can't change its stripes... But it's not like anyone expected a different result in the first place.
For the record, the RA2 community already tried writing such a book, but later we switched to a wiki - ModEnc. While it is far from complete at the moment, we are adding information fairly often. (But so far, only TS content is Morpher's tutorials...)
I think adding your info to the ModEnc will be more useful than writing your own book, because, well, firstly your (Sevelys) reputation would drive away plenty of possible contributors, secondly, wiki is better than anything that only one man has control of, and thirdly, updating a wiki is easier.
(Sheesh, DeeZire can't be arsed to update his guide even once, although there is a fair share of incorrect info in it and we pestered him often about it...) QUICK_EDIT
DCoder, i agree to you, but how many new people at PPM know ModEnc? Maybe 1 of the 50 people that are registering. So i say:
OR everyone puts a link to modenc in his sig;
OR i'll in the credits part link to modenc.
Whatever you choose, i'll NOT put a link in my sig about ModEnc. Sorry, no.
And since my ... err... relations with you, i'll promise i'll link also very often to modenc. With your permission, ofcourse.
PS. This is NOT a book. You know, or not, i visited very often modenc, but my tutorials will be more err... simpler. Ie, how to use rules.ini, how to make a voxel in OS voxel editor 3, how to make SHP's, what tools you need to use (like redutils), what tools you may NOT use (like tibed), etc... For more advanced modding, i'll sure link to your site.

It's listed as #1 in the RA2 forum sticky "Useful references". If people don't read the sticky, how do you expect em to read your tutorials?
Quote:
i'll NOT put a link in my sig about ModEnc
I didn't ask you to...
One more reason why ModEnc is better - it is easier to concentrate info in it, when compared to loose pages or tutorials. It was conceived as the most comprehensive modding information repository, so it (IMO) makes sense to add info to it as opposed to starting your own project from scratch. QUICK_EDIT

lol. Ahh the memories... Lora the Fairy. What the hell were you thinking man? And what happened to your Kirby avatar? HE KICKED ASS!!! _________________ Destroy to create. All for the hunt to dominate!
DCoder, again i've to agree to you, but...
1) People that only have TS won't look at the RA2 forum, so i suggest that you post it also at the TS forum;
2) I'm still put at the 'bad' list at modenc, so i WON'T POST THERE UNTIL I GOT REMOVED FROM THE LIST;
3) At modenc there are not actually tutorials, but more explainations of tags;
4) At modenc the explainations are ordened alfabetically, not cronologic (first explain rules.ini, then art.ini, then graphics, etc...) neither on difficulty.
5) The new modder wants to find the "getting started with modding" tutorials imeadately, so they need to stand apart.
6) At modenc there isn't any explaination of CNC (if i can call it CNC) Generals.
Futher, i can put my tutorials there, if you do what i've asked.
- Sev.
PS domonic: I don't know anymore how to call Carnohaversterlola, so say me please how i need to call him. _________________ I use a Unix-based system, that means I'll get laid as often as I have to reboot. QUICK_EDIT
In future can u ppl do me a favior and not reply to ppls posts with insults/bad remarks/etc. If u don't like the guy don't post to his threads. Posting insults is not productive and polutes any good a thread can have with pointless battles.
I personaly don't care what reasons ppl have for insulting others, just ignore ppl you don't like. _________________ Free Map Editor - Game Requirements - Stucuk.Net QUICK_EDIT
