Is your C&C 95 crashing at the borders of the map?
Subject description: There is a fix for it.
Windows XP SP1 or higher might experience some crashes with C&C 95 on certain maps when the mouse, unit or whatever (I haven't experienced that here because I have a special hate for ctfmon.exe, so I don't know for sure) goes around the border of the map.
It seems that windows introduced some feature that the game wasn't really expecting. Here's how to fix it:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Windows XP SP1 or above:
Control Panel >Regional and Language Options > Languages (tab) > Text Services and Languages >Advanced (tab) >Turn off advanced text services (checkbox)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, there's something i don't understand, why does it give out this error? I mean, why does this happen? What's the link between ctfmon.exe and C&C95.exe? QUICK_EDIT
my c&c95 just crashed 5 mintines ago thanks banshee for the heads up ..it crashed when i moved the commando near the courner of the map _________________ Link to a document to see what mods i have and/or working on or working with

There is another way (xp only, sorry), and you don't have to turn off adv. text services for the whole of windows, just right click on any shortcut to the program, go to the compatibility tab and check the box that says 'Turn off advanced text services for this program'. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
I run XP and I have TFD C&C but it still crashes when I turn off advanced text services and I dont run ctfmon.exe I checked... anyone have an idea what it could be? QUICK_EDIT
ctfmon.exe is related to a firewall I believe. _________________ 0h noez!11!!! one 11!! U just p00rd n00bs@uc3 a11 0v3r my l33t sk1llz!!!!!!11one!!111!!!one111!!!!!!!

What Is the Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon.exe) File?
Ctfmon.exe activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar.
what problem you have?
what are error text? (you should see message box with info if you press alt+tab) _________________ ARM forever - x86 sucks QUICK_EDIT
It happened to me for the first time in mission 4th or 5th of GDI (the one with Tanya-type soldier), I read through many forums and it appears that this bug happens in the same missions to everybody.. Next mission is based on the same map and the glitch happens again..
So far I don't think anyone has a solution to this problem.. And people know about this bug for more than half a year.. It's strange that EA does nothing to solve it, they even put the game for free - knowing that it's not bug-free. QUICK_EDIT
The error I get is
"The instruction at 00432421 referenced memory at 092fff49
The memory could not be read from
Click on OK to terminate the application"
I have this exact same problem, I don't launch it from TFD menu, and I have shut down advanced text services. It still crashes on the top border of all maps, and I get the same (not with the same memory slot number) error message Irwe does. _________________
So you think you can fix this? EA will probably not fix it... or at least not for a while
I think about it.
Possible I need more data about crash, because I play today and have not any crash. _________________ ARM forever - x86 sucks QUICK_EDIT
I was wrong, it is 6th and 7th mission of GDI that crashes.. Upper border of the map.. That's all I can tell, other maps seems ok, however I read somewhere that the same happens in 10th mission of NOD.. QUICK_EDIT
It happens on the 8th mission for Nod for me... when you start with some minigunners and some rocket soldiers and you find a old Nod base in the north east corner... then it crashes QUICK_EDIT
I need answer to questions:
1)Does it crash when you move mouse near map end or when you press mouse button?
2)Does it crash on some maps or with specific units? _________________ ARM forever - x86 sucks QUICK_EDIT

1)It crashes when I discover the base... when the shroud disappear.
2)I think it os on some maps cuz it happens on some GDI missions also and I don think it mather which units QUICK_EDIT
1) It happens when you're trying to move map upper, when you 'hit' the upper border of the map - error comes.. You don't have to click.. And for sure the map must be revealed..
2) Yes, it comes on specific maps, It's for sure 8th mission of NOD (because there are two to choose - this is the one on the left, you will start with some troops on the upper side of map). And It happens in 6th and 7th mission in GDI campaign, I managed to finish 6th mission but in 7th the same thing happens.. I don't think it has something to do with units, because it crashes with one unit, two units.. six units of whatever.. - but if you manage to don't put the arrow up you might finish the mission, however it's very hard to do.. QUICK_EDIT
It happend also on the 9:th mission for nod when you first get the flame tank and you start with a commando in the east.. the game crashed when I just started the mission. QUICK_EDIT
For me (using Vista) the game used to freeze a certain time after starting the game (usually shortly after starting a campaign or loading a mission), but that was easily fixed by setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95 _________________ QUICK_EDIT

do you try again?
what message you see? (press ALT+TAB and see msg-box)
P.S. This can happen, because I never have this crash, so I can't test it!
If it the same place, I have the last 100% good method IsBadReadPtr _________________ ARM forever - x86 sucks QUICK_EDIT

Where was the stealth tank at time of the crash? If it was near right bottom side of the screen, then I had this problem too. It is caused by shield distortion effect sampling outside of the screen. At that time i wrote simple modification which disabled the effect (can be found at EA forums) and latter I wrote more ugly and bigger code which leaved the effect partially intact by skipping last line of that sprite which I did not post because of its length.

I had like 6 stanks in my base.. and the base is at the right bottom so yea maybe
You can test it by giving a stealth tank a move command which will cause it to enter or leave the screen through the bottom edge of the screen in right half of the screen. QUICK_EDIT

uhm.. what do you mean?
What I was attempting to say is: In my case the crash consistently happened when I got the stealth tank into position marked on this picture (the picture is from 640x480 resolution, the crash happened with the default resolution of 640x400). If you move the tank into similar position and the game hangs, then it is possible that the crash you noticed was caused by the same problem. QUICK_EDIT

now I understand and yea it happen when I have the stank there... should it help with resolution 640x480 and how do I run C&C in that resolution? QUICK_EDIT
1)I tried this method a lot of times and it always works fine.
2)This is XP-Compatible patch, not Vista
It works most of the time however it has potential to cause a mysterious crash so it is not 100% good. That behavior is not Vista specific.

Heh, so noone can show here error message?
One example: "The instruction at 00460b41 referenced memory at 0a0ae0ec. The memory could not be read from."
There is more than one possible instruction address, another example is 00460bd1. QUICK_EDIT

don't consider me as n00b.
I really have resons why this funtion WILL work good in that place.
This isn't random pointer - this is index in array, which can't be greater than some value in any way. otherwise it already crash before.
