dramatic game addiction
Subject description: i know this should be in warcraft but...
first of all, before i show you this link,i just want to say how IGNORANT and how STUPID some poeple in this world can be.this issue is about a world hit game as you all now as world of warcraft(WoW),and how people are so addicted to this game.i just watched a video on a i dunno,16 year old teen who plays Wow for 16 hours straight, gets up at 4:00 am and stops at around 10:pm.his mother is devistated that she has a son that is so addicted to this game and she cant do any thing to stop it.not only that, but she is noticing changes in his personalty, smashing wholes throough walls and smacking his keyboard.she says she cant do anything to stop her son to stop playing, and is so sick of it.now this is the flash point.
her son does not go to shool, and is un-employed.so what does this mean?who pays for the game subscriptions?no other then her herself.geeze women,if you want to stop your son so badly from playing the game, cancel the internet connection, stop buying his game cards and monthly subs, and make him get his lazy ass off the comp and get a new door.
now,i was able to see like,1/4 of the comments on the link(its like 1940 coments dudes, dont expect me to read it all),and most of it is saying how world of warcraft isnt a drug, and is going on the game side, also telling her to do some thing other then cry her ass off....i dunno.read some of the comments, you will be supriseed with soceity these days. _________________
MMORPG's are always addictive, period. It's because you have people playing on the other side of the world, so you'll always stay on to for them, waiting for events, blahblah, you can't save and quit without missing anything, which is why I don't really like them. MMORPG are also a cause for addiction, because they create a virtual world. For the very addicted gamers, they believe it's a real world. These people can't separate fiction and reality anymore. Most of the persons doesn't have a social life _________________

uhh...carnivean,what didyou mean to say lol
heh,you know, people who commented on this went on the side of the game saying the media are stupid for thinking that the game is like some drug, and how they wory more about the game then they do about drug addiction.sadly,i have to partly agree with them.the game isnt the main problem, its the people playing the game.as some one said, guns dont kill people, people kill people.and this is prety much the same concept. _________________
By quoting me he says in a way 'you took the words right out of my mouth' or agreeing. And it's also true in saying that people who have severe addictions like this kid may also have underlying problems.
Other examples are football, people kill themselves in hooliganistic fights, so why don't we ban football? It is all down to the person and a sort of tolerance, morals and concience level to keep it under control. _________________

Damn straight.
I keep saying this; violent games do not cause violence. Lazy parents who don't tell their kids that doing that stuff irl DO cause violence. It's all the fvcking parent's fault.
Look at me. I've been playing violent games for well over a decade. I'm not violent at all. Well.. not unless you're stupid enough to pick a fight with me and hit first. THEN I'm violent. Until a teacher gets there, anyways. _________________

@gufu: It makes addiction. But you get bored in time and you just drop it.
I got pretty much of a WoW addict, and on private servers. My record was almost 10 hours, but that happened 3-4 times, but then I couldn't do big deal, except for screwing up things in the game. It gets very tiring. But I finally stopped. It was fun enough (although private servers suck), but it really created addiction even in my case. I used to speak only about that game, and in vacations I just woke up in the morning and played till going to bed... Large breaks between still. I couldn't do it.... 6-10 hours without a break. Even I had my own limits. But still I wasn't in a bad situation. Lots of gamers, if not most of them play at around 4-6 hours a day, if they have time. I do have to admit that sometimes I got so pissed off in the game that I bashed the keyboard, thrown the mouse around and so on (they still worked though, I wasn't so violent ).
But enough about my part. I always had my limits, even when I'm addicted to something. I want to replay WoW again since I'm dry in games right now, but at least I'll know how to avoid getting addicted (haha, I'll put my pc delete the game if I play for more than 3 hours ).
Still, I have a friend who's a WoW freak. He really plays that game too much. Lots of times he wakes up around 9-10 (AM) and plays till next day at 3-4 (AM), sometimes even 7!!! So 2 hours of sleep. That's madness. I keep telling him that he's really insane if he replaces his life with that game. Anyway, he still goes to school (the 9 to 7 (AM) part is in vacations available ).
I spend most of my free time on the PC, but I'm sort of at the border between a normal social life and addiction, just because of my limits, but that's different story.
Anyway, what are MMOs? Most of you have seen the Matrix. Well MMOs are close enough. They are a copy of reality indeed. And in reality it takes time to do things, same goes for MMOs. You have to travel and that takes a lot of time. You have to do certain quests/missions/jobs and that take time, and so on. The downside is that just like reality, it doesn't have an end, so people tend to get addicted since they like the fun, but never wonder when it ends.
Surely now I start playing Knights of the Old Republic for example (add an online part to that game and it really becomes a MMO), I play it for some time, but then I defeat a boss in the end and game over. It has an end which tells you: Get a life!.
Computer games, just like casino games and other stuff do get addicting, but you can give them up. They aren't drugs at all though. Drugs control your mind, biologically. You can't resist. Games instead, you can, although the developers sort of control your mind making patches... (in WoW's case especially; each patch has something new). It's still the gamer's fault. He gets fooled by the game's fun/beauty/etc and doesn't give up.
Now some said about why not stop paying the subscription and so on. Use your mind a bit more. If that particular mother stops paying, that guy can get violent, or commit suicide or something else. Think about it. To some those games really become something similar to drugs. You take it away from them, they become violent and/or do crazy stuff. The only safe solution would be for that guy to get bored sooner or later, but it's sort of impossible, or maybe Blizzard gets broke and the game doesn't continue at all, and that's a good end for most gamers... actually MMO fanatics, lifeless people. QUICK_EDIT
believe it or not,i read all of that.you do make a good point about the subscriptions there, but do rember, the more he plays the game, the more he gets violent as well,so there really is no end to his violent behavior,so i gues there will be no end to the violent behavior.but do rember,he says he is able to get off the game and stop playing any time.technicaly,i dont belive this much, but if i where to look at the guy,and look at other MMO addicts,i would think that he may be alittle right.
do you rember that story about that kid who killed himself based with the game runescape?he killed himself because he played to much of it,to the point where his mind couldnt take it,and so he stoped in the more drastic way.the same will probably happen to this kid, right now,his addiction is maybe on the over normal area, but sooner or later, its going to go beyond the extreme and then do some thing very drastic.the same thing about that addictions with everquest, the dude took his own life becuse he couldnt take the presure.
now it comes to the decission,do we let him keep on playing to the point where he gets bored(which is almost impoosible) and drops, and risking the fact that he may do some thing to harm himself? or do we cut the subscriptions, and never let him go on the game again, and again risking the fact that he will do some thing very odd. _________________
Conclusion: There is no real cure. It all depends on the victim's personality and mind, or maybe you can hypnotize him/her. There are a few if's here. If you cut the internet/subscription the guy can snap. If Blizzard gets broke, again he can snap.
So in cases like that, you're hanging by a rope that has both extremities very unsure. If one breaks, you fall. QUICK_EDIT
