Is 3d canvas any good?
hi, I want to use a 3d modelling software to make my own infantry as editing existing E1, E2, E3 SHPs appears to be a very daunting task for me . Also, I'd like to utilize 3d software to make complicated architecture.
So I want to know, is 3d canvas any good? what are it's competencies as compared to 3dsmax and similar programs? Is it easy to use? easy to learn? is it user-friendly?
thanks in advance for responses!
:EDIT: in what format does it save in? do we have anything that can transform 3d canvas files into voxels or does that apply to 3dsmax only? QUICK_EDIT

you'd best use either 3ds max or maya. especially if you want to go into the games industry later, its the software most companies work with. and even though im a max user now, id suggest maya, because you will earn twice as much for some stupid reason.
if you just want to model for yourself, take Max, cuz you can also make voxels with it using 3ds2vxl. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
yea, alot of companies are using maya to animate but its the same as 3dmax but different interface, I havent taken any maya classes yet, and yet to learn Zbrush, but I hear its pretty good. _________________ Delirium.. QUICK_EDIT
so... are you saying that 3d canvas isn't going to suit me? .
I have to subscribe and pay Maya and 3dsmax to be able to use them, and I'm short on $$ right now (I have to cut down on the job to study you know ) and 3d canvas is free. However, when I get my old back up HD I'll be able to resume 3ds. QUICK_EDIT

Full verison of Maya costs about $7000us, IIRC. I've used it and its great, the only problems with it are, as an absolute top-range item, you'll turn into an absolute perfectionist (well, happened to me...), its costly and you could do with a top-range machine to run it. For the purposes of modding, it doesn't really matter as there are plugins freely availible for exporting between the various common 3d formats.
Never heard of anyone using 3D canvas, so if you do please post _________________
3D Canvas is great for learning to model.
Don't listen to those who say to go with 3dsmax and Maya, there's no need to unless you have way more than enough money than you need.
I learnt to model using 3D Canvas and I definately recommend it. I would, however, suggest you spend the $100 to get the Pro version, its well worth it.
If you master 3D Canvas, move on to something like Cinema 4D, which is progressively more complex andmore expensive, rathing than spending the thousands of dollars on programs you will likely never learn. _________________
Jeeves I never could understand Maya it was just too complicated to learn. I recommend 3d max for those even beginning to learn to model. _________________ "Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live." I dont know it could totally ruin the program if they become merged. _________________ "Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live." QUICK_EDIT

it has potential, both to be one of the best, as well as to be one of the worst. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

I can say from experience Maya is not hard to learn. After the elegence of the interface and termonology incorperating English rather than jargon, everything else is hard to learn
The absolute worst thing is Blender. If you learn how to operate Blender first, you'll never be able to run anything else. Likewise, if you learn how to walk first, you'll never figure out Blender. Don't be lured in by the $0 price tag...
GMax is a stripped down version of Max, which is free, and if you're unwilling to pay for the upgrade, its probably a better option than Canvas. _________________
One thing people forget is Caligari Truespace. It's crappy program to do all the stuff, but the best one if you want to make a model fast.
I always make basic model in Truespace (10 year old 3.0 is free), export to Blender and do advanced stuff there. _________________ Time will tell...
