is it possible for the veteran coders to come up with some sort of a program that can interpret the except.txt? I mean... the 'possible address' entries which are basically numbers that refer to some point in the ini files (because that's what we edit)

DCoder's ini checker works great.. but only to a certain point. I'm starting to lose steam in my mod because of an error that I can't find. I've just to begun to REWRITE the whole thing and the job's overwhelming...

I'm sure that if we can come up with something like that, editing will be less painful for us and future modders.

Is what I'm suggesting possible? will it be too much work for the programmers?

As far as I know, the EIP: in the except is the key and all crashes with the same cause (a missing shrapnel weapon, for example) have the same EIP. I can imagine a listing of all sorts of Internal Errors and their corresponding EIP values would be very helpful. That can be created in two ways:
1) Intentionally coding the INI in a way that causes an IE and writing down the EIP along with the reason (missing airburst weapon, undefined weapons, etc), code another buggy thing, repeat ad infinitum.
2) sending your excepts with unknown errors to VK for analysis.

PD did write an ExceptChecker long ago (check the RockPatch forums) but I believe it was never updated and can only detect a couple of IE causes.

That reminds me,

Isn't there a complied list or a table of common IE's and bugs that modders run into and their possible effects? ex. (Missing weapons=crash game when unit appears, and the like.)

Its been a while, yet I recall seeing it but any searches so far have turned up nil.

However I am thinking about ... Except Checker 2 Smile
But I need in testers Smile
Tester must change the INI file in one place, run game, have IE,
save EIP address with IE description or send EXCEPT.TXT file to me Smile

it's only idea and don't send a thousand of EXCEPT.TXT files to me now Very Happy

Cool, Very Happy
that be insane, finding ways how to CRASH the game in every way possible.

but what about bugs that don't crash the game? kinda I mean things that don't generate an Except.ini (like the CTWR build fest or the Armory/Ammo tag +barracks kinda things?)

oh well, its way better than nothing! ^-^

This might help.

VK, I have several excepts (RP 1.07b) with known reasons, will that do or do you need excepts from the current RP version?

hmm, the strange IE happens when GDI loads. it happens 40% of the time and only during the first phrase: 'analyzing combat zone topograpy' I expect that it's got something to do with the maps but the problem is, all the maps are normal.. and it only happens with GDI.. if I only knew what TS reaaly reads during the 'analyzing combat zone topograpy' bit, I guess I can categorize the IE that I get and post it here.

but thansk DCoder, C&CVK and Sigil... every bit of info helps.

If you want, you can send me a RULES.INI or a map file
and I will find the error Smile
