Getting RA2/YR to work on XP is a puzzle - for some people it works straight away without any glitches, for some it needs Compatibility Mode enabled on the executables, and for some it just fails no matter what.
Compatibility Mode might fix this problem for you as well.

This is a known problem with XP SP2 that I have personally experienced and have found a way to get around it.

Would be a good idea to print these instructions because you will be restarting your machine.

Step 1: Restart, before the windows logo shows up, press F8 and go into Safe Mode.

Step 2: Once there, open My Computer, browse to the RA2 CD.

Step 3: In the root directory of the CD, try to run setup.exe, it will fail or do nothing at all, that is perfectly normal for Safe Mode.

Step 4: Go into the setup directory and run setup.exe there. Same deal as above.

Step 5: Restart back into normal Windows. Then try to run setup again. It should work.

This worked for Arikado and myself as well. If it fails for you, then I have no more ideas to suggest.
