there is a cheaper more beginer savey way. just download some ini files and change the "rules.ini" file to your desire. there is several tutorials on this site that should get you started. QUICK_EDIT
cheaper? no. just started where everyone did extract original files yourself, you dont know what changes other people made and you cant be sure what caused what and end up knee deep in IE's (Internal Errors)... so your cheating yourself in learning the basics of modding. you can look at code later on once you figured what does what. _________________ Delirium.. not true actually. you need to crawl before you do major hacks and learning how the ini files work is the first step. after mastering them you need to go use xcc mixer and editor. and cheaper is just a way i explain things.. i didnt mean for it to sound how it did. QUICK_EDIT
Let me make this clear so all of you understand it.
Learning XCC Mixer and the files the game uses is the first task for beginners.
Extracting the original rules.ini art.ini from the games mix files is the second task.
You should never do what wardeathfun is suggesting. Downloading the rules.ini file off some site is completely pointless since you have several copies of the files already on your machine. As Pynk stated, you don't know what changes were made to those downloaded rules.ini files, so it's just a bad idea. _________________
When I first started modding, I started by just editing units and buildings and such. For a beginner, it's a good idea not to worry about the graphics at first, that way you don't overwhelm yourself. Learn the commands first, test the waters, etc.

download the ini files on the bottom. it explains what everything means. it gives great detail inside the file what everything dose but it works for me and other ways works for everyone else. QUICK_EDIT

It's great that it works for you, but those "other ways" are the correct ways to obtain the files in question. Stop teaching people how to do it wrong. Seriously! This is just as bad as telling someone that TibEd is good. Do it again and there will be consequences. _________________

Well then, I guess, it's time for me to make a tutorial rules and art .ini files. And you can count on me to have all the original data + features that are secretly included, only shown in the .exe (cant remember any at the moment). This way we can direct them to one place.
Thats it. I'm doing it. _________________ "Don't beg for things; Do it yourself or you'll never get anything." QUICK_EDIT
If people actually looked at our existing tutorials and helpful threads, as well as took a look at the explanations of all the tags in rules.ini and art.ini that explain everything, you'd need not waste your time with such.
But as any other tutorial, it will be appreciated by only the smart-to-go-to-tutorials people.
EDIT:: Good luck with that, I hope it's something that'll help out some people. _________________
You keep asking wtf is the big deal with downloading ini files. Perhaps this log will answer that question. If it doesn't, I have just created a new unwritten rule: if you can't even extract your ini files, you have no right to ask for help editing the downloaded ones.

ok, im glad you tried to tell me i cant mod but i simply already know how and i looked and the ni files are untouched just like the sire says. i looked through em and have found only one difference in it and it is more detail explaining how the game works and what each coding is. i have had lots of questions and yet i went through the files i download and found my answer by the guy that extracted the ini files. i extracted the ini files once and was confused because some coding like "cashincrememnt" was not to be found. i wasnt saying he should always download the ini files just he is a beginer and may find it useful to not have to ask questions. i do make sure i am doing something right that wont effect my mod but right now i am a noob at modding and therefore i find it useful to use this ini file right now. i learned more from that ini file then i would asking questions here because people just mocks your nobbishness and trys to make you find it out yourself and when you finnally figure it out they mock you like saying "its about time" and calling you stupid and idiotic for how obvious it is and i dont really mine being called a noob for i am a noob at modding but i am not idiotic. i could care what you guys think because everything i do here is wrong and you dont here my side of the story and when you do you mock it. i know the ini files i downloaded are not changed in any way for i downloaded the ini files using the XCC Mixer from the actual game and right now i have no choice but to download it from the site for i cant download anything without my computer crashing so even if i wanted to use the xcc mixer i cant. i know that you use the xcc editor to put a giant mix file to add all the ini files to since i done it before but now i cant use any mod program. so it isnt lazyness that i have. it is common since to not download something on a crappy computer that will crash it. i have tried to make SHP cameo's and have failed because. you know what. i will post a pic.
there you go. here is the pics. Last edited by wardeathfun on Fri May 18, 2007 6:04 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
A paragraph has sentences, capital letters, punctuation, and separates into more paragraphs when necessary. All I see is a wall of text with a period here and there.
(And your computer is crappy, yet you run Vista instead of something less demanding. Thumbs up.) QUICK_EDIT
1.Listen to those who know more.
2.Do not talk while you are being explained something.
If you follow those 2 simple rules, you might just learn something, and start getting the ability to think coherently, until then, lurk.
Seeing as you probably don't know what lurking is, i'll explain that.
Lurking is the act of shutting the hell up and observing. _________________ Micro TS

All those images are telling us one simple thing. You have no idea that SHP Builder has KNOWN issues with Vista. That means Banshee already knows that SHP Builder screws up bad in Vista because a bunch of other people have already posted about it.
I don't see any screenshots of XCC Mixer.

What?
First you said XCC "downloaded" inis from the game? Then you say it failed to "download" them. Which is it? (It's too funny that he said XCC downloaded the inis. Next thing you know he'll say he extracts files from the internets.)
It's very simple: (RA2/YR)
Run XCC Mixer.
Click Found > Red Alert 2 > expandmd01.mix
Find rules.ini on the list.
Right click and hit Extract.
Choose where to save and there you have it. _________________ Last edited by IcySon55 on Sat May 19, 2007 3:33 am; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
@Icy: Just because it's a SIMPLE process doesn't mean it's going to be done simply, and easily. You will have those who completely screw up. Just like you'd think everyone would have common sense, it's not as common as you think.

Vista+CnC moding tools=failure
i know. thats why i dont download them. actaully anything with vista is a failure. i been listening to thoes who trys to explain something to me but i cant stand the bull comming out of there mouths. all DCoder is trying to explain to me is a wall of text is not a paragraph.
also Icyson i have an XP i use to use the Xcc mixer (when i actually used the ini files i downloaded from the xcc mixer) but now i am stuck with vista since it is right now gathering dust (which i am going to use again later for modding purposes only and my vista simply for whatever its good for (if anything).
but whatever. i am tired of arguing. so lets just leave it that i am wrong because i could really care if i win this little fight. QUICK_EDIT
