Jonwil has recently coded and released a set of tools to make the life of all C&C3 modders easier. Since the mod SDK only comes with exporting tools, jonwil has made some importing tools. If you have the prerequisites from the mod SDK, you'll be able to run these tools. Anyway, here they are:

-> SciTE XML Editor: That's a XML editor, based on SciTE which was originally a Lua editor. Lua is a script language made in a university (PUC) near my home used in many games. Anyway, with this editor you can edit the units and every XML based stuff. That wasn't coded by jonwil, but it's certainly useful.

-> Apt Extractor Tool: It extracts the APT UI files, providing its XMLs and textures, so they can be easily modified.

-> Texture Extractor Tool: Place the name of the texture there, without the extension and it provides you the texture itself plus its XML related file.

-> W3X Decompiler: It converts the compiled image streams back to w3x files. You can also convert the low detail version of these models by checking the low detail option.

And he has plans for much more. Read the whole thing HERE and download the tools HERE. They all come with the source code that can be used on open source tools, as long as they follow the GNU GPL 3.0.

It's usually the same as the model name.

You can look in the damage states too and use whatever "Original=" is, but I'm not sure that applied to infantry.
