I have restored it, with a custom destruction animation as well. Overall this has taken me several days.

Westwood scrapped this version due to France disallowing them usage rights because they wanted to put it in the game as a destroyable structure, and a tesla coil. After releasing the game, France found out they still called it the Eiffel Tower still in it's ugly, butchered state, and after 9/11 they disallowed name usage rights as well.

Hence the ugly, unrealistic, uninspired PARIS TOWER in the released game. Rolling Eyes

UPDATE: Forgot the destroyed image, in the isourb palette. It is now added.

It still looks a bit blurry and the destroy anim. looks a bit goofy, but it gives a nice feeling of retroness... This and other your work are great, keep it up!

looks cool none the less Smile . I wonder how they wouldn't let the tower be in the game, despite all the other monuments that were blown up in the tiberium universe eh?

The city of Paris simply wouldn't give the necessary legal permissions.

That explosion is just... Unnatural. No shaking of the entire building, just.. :S Otherwise.. not bad. top is blurry as crap, but w.e

And how can you deny a game company "legal permissions" to use a building? Confused Would they have declared war on EA if they used it? Confused I mean.. seriously. Wtf?

The city of Paris holds all legal permissions for usage of the Eiffel Tower in ANY media production, or advertisement, etc. They could easily win in any case they took against EA.

Los Angeles County holds the same rights over the Hollywood sign, interestingly enough.

I know this topic is old, but, I got really excited when I found this, only to find that this SHP is drawn completely wrong ingame.

Turned out it wasn't centered correctly. I attached the edited SHPs that are centered as they should.

Still, it's missing shadow Crying or Very sad

It's just a game....the French and German officials are taking video games often a tad too seriously (I'm looking at you, BPjM).

Imagine it...this was classified as harmful to minors (removed from the index in 2002) by the BPjM.

You know this thing is preparatory for the little terrorist.

You wouldn't want to see YOUR kids destroying buildings using helicopters, don't you?

well, anyway, it looks pretty good ingame Smile

The strings file change doesn't seem to cause MP incompatibility, so I'm keeping it installed ^_^

It's been thoroughly cleaned up too though. I just took some time to compare the original prerelease screenshot, and it's been enhanced a lot. The original was far too bright, which caused a lot of details on the ground under the tower to disappear in a haze of white. Not to mention the explosions, and the lightning mess around the top.

BrianPrime really did an amazing job on this one.

I did always like this, I never had anything against Prime either, he always did make me laugh (despite his over-the-top case of Emo).

Do you actually see the destroy anim anywhere? I tried my hardest to get that thing destroyed in Soviet mission 5, but it's almost invulnerable, and the mission ends pretty much the moment you come close to it.

Or is it used in some other mission too?

Does it has no shadow? Confused

The rusty brown on the beta pic looks imo also better.

I've only seen it in Soviet Mission 5 and the Skirmish map Paris Revisited.

Yeah, I already mentioned that... it has no shadow, because the original map was nighttime, with the lightning at the top of the tower being the biggest light source. There's only shadow below the tower.

Lin Kuei Ominae wrote:

Not really. It's too bright. The edited version fits into the game more naturally.

Also, this might be a palette restriction anyway.

Doesn't matter; it really doesn't have shadow ingame either. I was just saying that it was because the original prerelease pic had odd lighting.

If you can, just get it as close as the "Paris Tower" explosion anim as possible. IIRC the main column broke in half, fell, and blew the rest up (although I'd rather just see it collapse instead of going BOOM).

The reason it was less "glowy" is because RA2's Pallets changed the color once put in SHP format. Well I just put the Eiffel tower into SHP Builder and the color suprisingly didn't change much Smile
