Rambling of the day: Rumours on a new Renegade...
Subject description: Why do people waste time with rumours and why I'm also wasting time with it...
Some days ago, smurfbizkit from Derelict Studios has found a request for a Sound Designer to work in a FPS for leading sci-fi franchise and, in the end of the article mentioned C&CX game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Responsible for designing and implementing sound effects for C&CX including sound effects design and editing, music integration, field recording, technology development and documentation."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The story reached the GameSpot.com crew who managed to get some sort of unoficial confirmation, which so far is as official as Red Alert 3 once was.
And, it's being a while since I don't post mod announcements or gaming rumours, except for the Middle East Crisis 2 and Asylum for C&C3 in a recent post. The fact is that Red Alert 3 was a good lesson. Gaming studios have a lot of projects being developped, but a lot of them don't see the light of the day, like Continuum, which would compete with world of warcraft, while others like C&C3 had many names like Tiberian Twilight, Tiberian Incursion and were even changed to become Generals. C&C3 took many years to go to the stores.
So, it's really possible that another Renegade will be sold in the next years, but does it really matter right now, when nobody has any idea of a game that will take years to become a reality? Last edited by Banshee on Sun Sep 23, 2007 6:51 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
The fact that they're advertising for a sound designer means they must at least be at some stage ahead of the concept/brainstorming process, which RA3 wasn't. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
i was hoping somebody would make another Renegade game coz i hated the first one. anyway if it doesn't work out then we got Crysis which is gonna be the same game in a different universe it seems. QUICK_EDIT
ViPr take a look at mah mod ^_- It's like Renegade but a million times better.
Unfortunately managing it and my junior and senior year in college have taken up all the time I used for modding YR, maybe we will release a few of the old voxel work we did. 3ds2vxl is awesome. QUICK_EDIT

how is it possible for someone to make a mod like renegade. i'm guessing you misunderstand what i like about renegade.
what i want are games that are a combination between RTS and FPS with vehicles. renegade was similar to that except that you couldn't build buildings and there was no AIs. anyway despite that i kind of enjoyed playing the multiplayer demo of Renegade but there were a few features of the game that were extremely annoying to me and they could have been fixed in minutes which would have made the game so much better.
there was no inertia when you were not in a vehicle so you moved in a really stupid fake jarring way
there were red rectangles drawn around enemies even when you couldn't see them which meant the stealth element and element of surprise was gone except when the invisible suit was used.
there was no way to kick obnoxious players and even your teammates could steal your vehicles when you got out to repair them. one time my vehicle was pinned against a corner by one of my team-mates in his vehicle. he just rammed me and held me against the wall and i couldn't move and he wouldn't stop for ages
there was no voice communication and the text communication was useless because it was only a few lines long and there was no console to pull down and scroll through to read missed messages and i think i remember it was mixed with kill notifications which made it even harder to catch communications before they got pushed off screen.
when you bought a new character then you lost the current character instead of being able to keep him back in storage to use later when you lost the others or whatever.
the vehicle view was 3rd person, too high, and did not rotate and tilt according to your vehicles movement which made it unrealistic and unsatisfying to achieve kills
when you killed an enemy there was a boing sound which was useful but it killed the atmosphere because the sound was too comedic and cartoony.
i seem to remember that whenever i went indoors the framerate went really low and made it harder to fight.
i seem to remember there was no repair building so if nobody repaired your vehicle, which happened too often, then you had to do it yourself which meant you had to be the characters that had the repair gun which meant i almost never played as any of the other characters. QUICK_EDIT

I really hope they DON'T use the BF engin, it would suck! The Source enign would be great (but atfer all it's EA, they want all the credit themself) but then EA would have to buy Steam, wich I hope they wouldn't :p _________________ This is a signature QUICK_EDIT

Well it's a mod based off Renegade's own engine, albeit with a lot of modifications.

The movement's a bit arcadey, yeah. It's not like Source where you drift a bunch after letting go, but it's also not like Source where you can put your shoulder to a wall to run 50% faster and use well timed jumps to accelerate your momentum to stupid levels.

Well, we put white rectangles just to be more RA-like and people got pissy about that. Seems people like their red rectangles.

The server's got (and most Ren servers these days too) very easy ways to kick obnoxious players, and commands to bind vehicles to your team. But really, there's asshats in any game.

We implemented graphical style kill messages and a non-auto-scrolling, easy-to-read, logged chat view mode you can reach with the press of a button and dismiss with another button press
when you bought a new character then you lost the current character instead of being able to keep him back in storage to use later when you lost the others or whatever.
I don't really know of any games where you keep your old character in reserve..
the vehicle view was 3rd person, too high, and did not rotate and tilt according to your vehicles movement which made it unrealistic and unsatisfying to achieve kills
We've tried to set up the cameras better. A first person camera view sucks really badly though, although it's been tried in Ren before.
when you killed an enemy there was a boing sound which was useful but it killed the atmosphere because the sound was too comedic and cartoony.
The number one modded file is that. We've got a very subtle kill indication noise.
i seem to remember that whenever i went indoors the framerate went really low and made it harder to fight.
We've got superior frame rates.
i seem to remember there was no repair building so if nobody repaired your vehicle, which happened too often, then you had to do it yourself which meant you had to be the characters that had the repair gun which meant i almost never played as any of the other characters.
We've got construction yards that auto-heal your base, and naval yards, sub pens, and service depots offer pay-for healing just like in the old C&C games. We're also less focused neccessarily on repairs, especially field repairs, and more focused on proactive defensive measures, intercepting incoming enemies, laying minefields, and the like.
It's free and standalone, I'd appreciate if you gave it a shot at least once. QUICK_EDIT
The camera when your in a vehicle is APB is horrible...
I'm really hoping that this is a sequel to Renegade.
However, the Crysis engine rumours were dismissed quite a while ago... _________________ QUICK_EDIT
Ok, This is a new renegade/Battlefield style game, and When i probably try it out, IM gonna get sick
isn't battlefield different from renegade though in that when an enemy unit is killed it isn't really destroyed but is teleported back to base and no money is lost so therefore there isn't much point in destroying the enemy so the way you have to play is to just wait till all the enemy units leave an area and then take over it without killing them or they will appear in the base you are trying to take. QUICK_EDIT
One of the dozen or so mods being made for Crysis, of course, under the direct assistance by the developers(supposedly)? _________________ ... QUICK_EDIT

Those are game elements, not engine elements.
They won't use the BF engine though, it's just a case of anything with big team multiplayer is automatically called Battlefield style now. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
