Yeah, I know, it corrupts any maps using the altered tileset. I'm only defragmenting the Terrain Expansion Sets. And why would I need backward compatibility? If a new version replaces a previous one, there can't be any problems surely?

Depends on how its being used... if its used as a plugin that multiple mods would be expected to share (as is the YR TX), then you have to worry about already existing TX maps being broken that their authors won't fix. It really depends on how many TX maps you would estimate are out there in the wild as to whether you will break compatibility or not.
