Your future employment
I'm just interested, how many of you members of ppm are tyring to get a job in the gaming buisness? Or what opther tpye of job do you want to get/have? Is this dream of yours a wish you feel you can acheive or just a fantasy like becoming an astronaut. Like personally I'm gonna be a dentist, but I've always wanted to be a cast member of Saturday Night Live. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Originally I wanted to go into game design. I still do, but I am studying for animation at the moment both 3d and traditional. I love Flash <3. I also like working on concept art, 3d modeling, texturing, digital painting. foley and sound design. etc.
When I was younger I wanted to become an actor or a biologist/paleontologist. So being an animator kinda consolidates these early childhood whims.
Edit: Current employment: I tutor fellow students in the realms of Zbrush/3d modeling and Flash. _________________ Delirium.. Last edited by Ickus on Mon Jan 14, 2008 9:13 am; edited 3 times in total QUICK_EDIT

I mostly go for Aerospace Engineering (my current major) because I like designing aircraft (mostly fighters and bombers). But I also have bad habbits such as ROM hacking and modding and would also like to become a game developer someday in the future. _________________

I find doing something I like a lot as a job a bit troublesome. I've now been working in a job that would normally be close to what I like to do, but the fact it is a job does bring in features which take the fun out of it: hurry, need to do things that aren't directly related to doing the job (such as marketing, being a small company the customers don't come in without doing such things), and the need to sometimes do too much of everything.
Thus I'm returning to unemployment for now, although not entirely by own choice. I'm trying to figure out what I'd like to do as a job; at the moment a simpler job sounds much nicer, a job that doesn't have a need for a lot of thinking and sitting. QUICK_EDIT

I really want to do gamedesign, but now I'm studying Communication and Multimedia Design (google it for those who don't know it)... Now I'm saying this, I must still do something for this study. Damn QUICK_EDIT
Gonna see if I can't get my A+ Computer Repair Certification before I leave high school, I'm currently taking a course this year and will continue on it next year.
Just gonna be some average computer technician. _________________

Well the world's my oyster at the end of my physics degree. Depending on how well I do in my third/fourth year, I might do a postdoc and go into research or something. Otherwise, I'll probably end up being an accountant who makes loads of money and does bugger all. Or become a rock star, it worked for Brian May at least. _________________

I would like to go into Graphics design, if not, computer repairs. I dont really have much under my belt, other than contacts in a lot of places, just gotta cross my fingers and hope something returns good. QUICK_EDIT
Internship in some programming business is a requirement for acquiring my CS degree (not quite what I would expect from a CS course), and of course there's a possibility of continuing work with them after graduation. If not, I have experience in various programming fields, so I should be able to find an occupation relating to programming. Failing that too, I don't know, there's a great shortage of teachers around here, I suppose I could teach computers/math/science (for $300 a month, aww). (What the heck, it still beats Fenring's dilemma ) QUICK_EDIT
I want to either become the leader of of anarchist revolution or have my own small bussiness, which would grow and make my life simple, with lots of sex and alcohol. QUICK_EDIT
Game programming, no doubt, it's what I aspire to do, and what I will do. _________________ Micro TS
Portable, no campaign, movies or music, just the engine and needed resources for skirmish and lan. QUICK_EDIT

Or I wanna be a tester, test programs, mods, games and so on. I still learning basic EXE hack now, and I even start to work on 3D again. _________________ Can you hide from me ? QUICK_EDIT

Heh, I guess that I'm a special case, as most seem to be interested in a gaming related career or a military career.
I want to be a scientist, a biochemist, which I'm already studying. Latter I would focus my career into genetics. And as a dream I would love to be an astronaut, however I would be happy by just going to space, even as a tourist QUICK_EDIT
lol. Nice.genetics.. to be but sometimes I feel I am not in my own time zone...err Sometimes I wish I was like on a boarding flight to Neptune City. amid a crowd of cybergoth/punk post-humanists .but thats just me.. >_>
Other than technical artist, I like traditional art as well. painting and writing fiction. Don't think they will go anywhere by themselves but definately helps having a variety of skills. _________________ Delirium.. QUICK_EDIT
I did think about getting into a game orientated career, but then I realized about 90% of the people who try probably end up making animation for commercials or shrek's shoes in disney movies. Plus a dentists make an average of $160,000 a year in the US (Although I want to move to Europe). _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Game design. I'm currently working on two different projects as it is. ONe being an rts and the other a side scroller, more information as I progress. _________________
I'm currently planning that what I'm doing at the moment, Modding etc. will get me some kind of job in the future. Otherwise, I've not really thought about what I want to do. I plan on permamently moving away to the USA as soon as I'm able to do so, maybe something there will be better for me. QUICK_EDIT
Skateboarding for me. Probably get sponsored, and go am, mabye even pro. It's been my dream to out and just skate and get some footy, do a photo, whatever. Just to be there on a team and skate, doing what I want.
However if that fails I'm currently studing 3D modeling and computer programming. Might go for 3D modeling more than computer programming though.
And if they all fail..... uh, go skate with my friends..... _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
I personally believe the only real way to enjoy games dev is to be part of the creative side (i.e. a graphics artist or the like), but that is just me. Sure programming can be creative... though, but your pushed around by the graphics dudes, who want new tools and better caps.
I am studying two degrees, one in Software Engineering and another in physics. It takes 5 years to complete both, and got around a year left. I currently work as a student engineer in an electrical engineering firm:
http://www.beartech.com.au/
developing software. On a less impressive note, I also work in retail, where the cash gets me through my studies.
I would love to get something involved in physics, like becoming an engineer who designs new equipment for experimental physicists. I will not become a researcher though, as I think 5 years at uni is long enough, and want to get on with things. QUICK_EDIT
I was originally dreaming to pilot an F/A-18E, but thanks to my acrophobia >.< Oh, there aren't any Super Hornets in the Singapore Air Force, lol Perhaps an F-16 would do? I'd probably be a road sweeper ROLF _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
I Want to get into either Computer repair, video game design, or auto repair. I might join the army too. _________________ Comcast: Yo dawg we herd yo were downloading, so we put fail in yo modem so yo cant download while yo failin! QUICK_EDIT
I'm studying to be a 3d game artist at University.
I need to get my arse in gear though as I'm a tad behind at the moment and until May to finish everything.
Then I need to spend all summer doing extra portfolio stuff..
i'm working as a printer/printing manager and thus we specialized on the local sports teams around us from handball to football, i see this as a good step in the right direction to learn media design after that and go straight forward. _________________ Hydraw Art on Facebook QUICK_EDIT
I doing some research on various game companies (Valve,Blizzard, id..etc) and some are hiring. obviously for senior positions or similar. The best chances are doing what the developers of portal did..or internships..the try before they buy. deal. but if you make it you earn alot more in salary than someone off the street. _________________ Delirium.. Go with valve, if you become more than a programer, you will have quiet an impact... _________________ DUNK! QUICK_EDIT

I think it's wishful thinking to go straight into a massive company like that. You'd probably start in a smaller company first and once you finally have a few years of experience in the field then you could be considered for a job at somewhere at Valve. _________________

I don't think Valve (or any other big company) will take ppl who have little to no experience (aka just finished college). Or you must be really lucky QUICK_EDIT
yea the team that made portal is the exception. It wasn't a mod..it was a senior project for their classes.
It's not that real talented people do find a way in if they need you and if your at the right place at the right time they pick you up..granted its not gonna be a senior postion...or anything like that..
big companies are usually too busy to deal with a lot of people..their approach is if they see someone's work they really like, they contact them to see if they really like the person who made them
..I recall one of the guys at pixar would go to different studios and tell them he is there for an interview. awaiting with portfolio in hand. Testing his luck. he got in that way..of course. its sometimes pushing it. but you never know. what do you have to lose?. _________________ Delirium.. QUICK_EDIT
I bet when people try to get into the gaming buisness, their first job ends likee being on EA or another big name like that, making something like a sports game-Something that requires people to make and work on, but doesn't exactly require that much imagination but can work as a way for people to prove their ability. _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Maybe but their is no time for that. You where hired for that position. there might be some training with all the propriety software but theres really no need. You proved yourself already with your demo reel/interview.
and actually you'd be surprise how much work goes into something like that, especially something realistic..all the research needs to be accurate and of course with graphics improving..this is would definately be key point. Else you lose winning the audience who expect to see their favorite..sports ppl. Unless it wasn't based on reality. Then you have to design the characters.and thats even more work.
Ouch...yea its pretty competitive..but moving..as those that where cut were able to find other things. _________________ Delirium.. QUICK_EDIT
