If I'm making a mod, can I, as in generals, put the folders data/ini/oobject/etc.. in the command and conquer 3 directory to make the changes take place immediatly? Or do I have to use all te MOD SDK stuff?

you have to use the mod sdk, because you have to compile all your changes to a mod.

It takes longer if your pc is bad... A faster pc results in faster compiling Wink
On-topic: yes, you must compile each time you want to test your changes. It may take a while, but the compiler does all the hard work of creating the mod (if you didn't make any errors in your .xml files #Tongue).

I see this is going to be fun...

I'm not home so I can't read the mod sdk how-to-files right now, but do they include everything on what I need to do? (and .xml file, I know I can open that up with internet explorer, is it I how edit it too?)

My days of modding generals may be comming to a close if modding Kane's wrath proves to be as fun as what I hear it is, it's been a good 3 1/2 weeks #Tongue.

Internet explorer can open them, but not edit them (at least as far as I know).

But they are basicly a textfile - every editor should be able to open them, but I suggest Notepad++ or other xml editors Wink

Notepad++ or Programmers Notepad are good. (both are free)

Although regular Notepad that comes with Windows will do the trick.

yup, normal notepad can open it. I have access to the files. The stage is set...and yet I very much don't feel like I'm going to mod this game. Lack of assests and no way other than getting 3dsmax to make mah .w3x. Woop-de-do, I gave the visceroid to the mutant hovel. If I could add new units or even change the way some old units looked I would be happy.

Thus the uber question: is there like a student edition of 3dsmax that is alot cheaper? That maybe could export .w3x? Otherwise, I guess I will stick to zero hour.

Yes there is a student version of 3DSMax. Have a look at the autodesk homepage or directly for shops specializing in students versions.

Keep in mind though that "a lot cheaper" for a 3k$ product might still be some hundred bucks. My university sells 3DS 9 with 2 year student license for 119,00€, I guess that´s the price you can expect from other shops as well.

Just get it trough a "different" way #Tongue It's still too bad that we have to count on EA for some ingame models, since we haven't (yet) found a way to extract them from the game...
