Open Map Competition 4: The 4th Place Is...
Subject description: Move your units now or get flooded!
Hello again! In the last news I mentioned a sneak peak, right.. Nevermind that. I totally changed my mind about it. It would be a waste of my time, specially because the winner will be known soon. Another thing is that all maps were reuploaded because the preview pictures were flipped. Thanks to Hexetic for the warning.
Anyway, into business: back in august, we delayed the submission deadline for the Open Map Competition 4, because EA APOC offered us the possibility to add the winners of the contest on Kane's Wrath. At the moment the offer was done, Kane's Wrath was not announced, so he just mentioned 'future product'. The email was something like that:

Hey Banshee,
I have some other community promotions to run first, but we can run this next week, especially after my "announcement" of how I'd like to support OMC.
So here goes, this is ABSOLUTELY TOP SECRET. YOU GUYS CANNOT ANNOUNCE THIS IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. If you mention or hint at this before I say anything next week, I will.....lets not go there )
I'm going to hold my cards back a bit, hope you understand, so I'm going to be fairly vague for now. When I announce this officially next week, then we can jointly promote it together.
We'd like to consider the winning maps of OMC 4 for inclusion in a "future product". Consider, meaning, the winning map or maps we'd put
under another review and would work with the map makers to polish it for inclusion in a "future product", of course this would be a multiplayer map.
How many maps can win? Just one? I'd be looking for 2-3 maps to consider.
Just to reiterate, this is not 100% guaranteed, but I think the maps OMC produces are pretty damn high quality would require little polish to be included officially in a "future product".
How does that sound as a grand prize for your competition?

For me, it sounded great! Less than two weeks later, Kane's Wrath was announced and the possibility of inclusion of the winners of the Open Map Competition on KW was announced in the same day. In november, he set me a date to send these maps. I had the ratings from Hexetic and almost all ratings from Clazzy. Bhones also told me the maps he gave the highest score. The maps he said are the 1st, 3rd and 4th places of this contest. However, in the following email, he said he made a mess up, to actually send the map that now it is in 2nd place instead of the 3rd. But that was too late. I've sent the maps before midnight of the date set by APOC on his timezone (not on mine) with a carbon copy to chickendippers (the witness), who played all maps and enjoyed them.
The ratings from Bhones arrived few days later. Assassin's and spyVspy's rating took much longer. I've never received an answer from APOC if these maps were indeed included or not on Kane's Wrath. While I honestly think they weren't included, specially because the mappers were not contacted to work together with the development team to improve these maps. While, when I emailed the maps, I asked him to not reveal the maps to public, to prevent the judges from knowing anything about them. But that would not prevent them from contacting the mappers in private. I've emailed him recently again, to ask about this subject and I haven't got a reply.
So, in short, we've recommended these maps for inclusion on Kane's Wrath, but you'll only know if they were really included on march 24th, unless APOC replies before that.
Now, after this long rant, let's finally get to the 4th place, Damned Nations, from Dojynn. This is a 1 vs 1 night map, where two bases are separated by a river in a dam, somewhere in Italy. This map makes an excellent usage of scripts, making it very dynamic. Some parts of the map get flooded after some time, while other parts are opened for land units, forcing you to change your attack and defensive strategies from times to times.
You can download and view more details about how this map scored HERE. You can view and download the other announced submissions at the OMC results page, which are always been updated as soon as the maps are announced.
Congratulations for Dojynn, who will get a Prima Official C&C 3 strategy guide and a cool renegade mouse mat. But the top 3 prizes are the big ones. We'll announce the third place tomorrow. And it can be a map from King Base, JBV3737 or razorblade001. And I can assure you one thing as well: it was also recommended for inclusion on Kane's Wrath. So, who is next? Check it out tomorrow! Whoops, I realised I made a mistake in my comments! The first time I played it I destroyed part of the dam at the exact same time as the water level went up then wrote some stuff about it then forgot to change it later.
I honestly thought this map should have got first place, if this didn't win it then the one I chose for second probably did. _________________
