Best Infantry Contest 2008
Best Infantry Contest 2008
And the winner is Machine
in the category for the best RA2 infantry.
1st: Machine for his great Jumpjet Infantry
2nd: Blade for his PsiSpy
3rd: DaFool for his Combat Engineer
4th: partyzanPaulZy for his GI remake
Machine
Blade
DaFool
partyzanPaulZy
Thanks to all for their work and participation.
Since DaFool was the only one who submitted a TS sized infantry, we don't have a contest for it. The TS infantry is included in his download.
I didn't got an answer from Xeno, that's why we are only 3 judges and i decided to publish the results.

This is an awesome looking infantry. The colors and details are great and the size fits to other RA2 infantry. The animations are great too, but since some are unfinished they only get 8 points for Quality. The quite low Suitability rating results of the many frames for each anim, that makes it look slow ingame. But overall they are still great to watch.
Machine, i can't wait to see the final version!

A really good infantry we have here and the size fits well to original RA2 infantry. But some more details on the 3dmodel would have been nice. Ingame it turns out quite simple since the black coat looks a bit colorless. The animations are nice but lack a bit of detail like blood in the death anim or some sparks for the mind attack which looks like he's waving.

Even if it is a quite nice 3d model, it doesn't turns out very well ingame. First it is too big to fit with the original units what takes most points for suitability. Also the lighting is very simple which makes it very artificial. The animations are quite well but still don't look very organic (e.g. the crawl anim). Some blood for the death anim would be nice too.

Even if it's a color replace job of the Seal mixed with some GI parts, it turned out quite well and doesn't looks too similar to one of them. The animations are nice, but they are not new, so only a low Originality rating. In the end a good GI alternative.

Well i like this one a lot, it had a great mix of colour, looks nicely and especially fitting with yuris weird army.
But it had been better with nicer animations, they look too chopped for me and a bit weird... anyway i give it a total of 80%

With a few words to the model, i especially didn't liked the "colourful" layout and that it looks like a teenager.
on the other hand the TS Shp looks pretty good and nice, just the colours...i give it a total of 60%

Well it may sound a bit unfair but this is the only infantry were i can see and recognize every edit and tough....i have seen that before...
i'm sorry to give a total of 30% this is nothing against copy and paste work but this was too obivous....

This entry is very nicely done, it could have benefited from some more variation in color however.
The animations are beautiful and ...plentiful, perhaps too much so, the amount of frames per animation might make them appear too slow as well.

A fairly nice shp, could have benefited greatly from using meself's downsizer.
the animations are nice in general, though the death animations are overdone.

Overall unremarkable, the Combat engineer isn't terrible , it might fit in with a future mod.
The animations do need a lot of work, overall very robotic, it's death animations in particular had me cringing.

Building...Hm... I don't like the 3rd entrie. the first entrie only shows them from the backside. :/ The second entrie is meh... so is the fourth. I am disappointed. Oh well. _________________ DUNK! Last edited by gufu on Sat Mar 22, 2008 3:40 am; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT
congraduations to everyone who participated. Machine that is a really great guy, like a zone trooper mixed with a rocketeer.
Lol, I got the best comments; "unremarkable" and "isn't terrible".
Yeah, I guess I do have a long way to go before I make decent stuff, I have no idea how to do lighting, and shadows and blood I think I would have to pixel in. But I tried, and the result is an OK looking lego man. The colours, now lookking at it in comparison, does make him look like a hippie lol. I originally wanted a dark green, but there isn't that much green on the pallete, so I went with the allied column instead.

Congratulations! They look all great, but only one note for Combat engi - no shadows.
To my SHP: It hasn't been created especially for this competition. Compare with the original Seal and GI. Anyway it's not important win, but take part in. _________________

I will get round to making a cameo at some point (probably for a cameo comp if any start running), but I can't make one straight from the model as its far too low detail.
I find the comments on mine and machines animations a bit amusing, his are too long where mine look a bit chopped... some people are never happy :p Mine run the same as the existing RA2 anims which are short, the deaths don't have any blood and look a bit exaggerated because a number of the existing RA2 ones follow that kind of setup. I'm surprised I got rated for originality as high as I did since the unit is heavily based upon the psi-corps trooper. I could have done with playing around with softbody for the coat, particularly with the levitate animations which would have benefited from it. Still ,I provide the blend for the model so people can use it to improve it if they want. QUICK_EDIT

Hmm
I quite like the appearance of each, but I must say, I really like the Jumpjet and the GI/SEAL mix.
The Jumpjet just looks awesome, although it needs a 50% frame reduction for it be suitably used in RA2
The GI/SEAL mix is nice, mainly because it is an Allied style infantry that does not carry an MP5 or Machine Pistol _________________ YR modder/artist, DOOM mapper, aka evanb90

To be complete I add 2 non-final stages:veteran and Marine, both carry MP5, veteran's only difference from GIm, Marine is Seal with the bulletproof vest + different idle anims from original Seal.
Yeah, modern GI shp differs from Seal in idle anims .
@Machine: Great job, but as said EVA-251, but that's not real problem.
@Blade: PsiSpy's frame rate is OK.
@DaFool: Yeah, but you are improving pretty fast.

cameo comp? come one blade, I want to use it in my mod, could you do sooner? when you have freetime, In meantime I search in google and se if I find anything QUICK_EDIT

I forgot to mention...the idle animations are not that good. It looks like flies are buzzing around it in the second animation. The proning animation is also bizarre. QUICK_EDIT

Nice cameos, but I wonder, how they'll look ingame.

Those flies are there from the reason (smelly sausage from the paper),
I'll change it with reading a paper and the other idle anim will be changed with reloading or something else (?). _________________

Nice work, just wanted to make sure everyone knew that Xeno left the community a while ago but definetly usable material there.
minus points on jumpjet for no sequence and also for using ts shadows when if its hovers, its harcoded to one shadow in ra2.
its good for ts inf but it doesn't fit with ra2 style.
suitability should be under how praticial is it to actually in mods as there are plenty of nice voxels, etc which are just inpratical to use ingame. Last edited by Allied General on Sun Mar 23, 2008 4:57 pm; edited 1 time in total QUICK_EDIT

Nice news. An improved version of it, with less frames and a fixed cheer anim, should come soon. As soon as I fix a small problem with my PC . QUICK_EDIT
Good Kane, I like what I see! Machine, you did especially well. And so did Blade and partizanPaulzy! All three are quite useable and fresh. DaFool, if only you'd made your entry fit in, it'd been a whole lot better.
Overall, this competition is a big success! Congratulations on all of you! QUICK_EDIT
Well, the reason it is so large to start out with it because that is the size wy renders kinda default to, so it's easy to keep everything uniform, plus it's nice to have a master copy with as much detail as possible (and I've thought about doing an indoor mod, which would naturally be infantry heavy, but it's probably not going to happen). Anyways, it's also nice to have a rather large infantry because then people can scale it down to whatever size they want it to be, whether ts or ra2 or maybe even their own. Below is a pic of how the size of my guys generally comes out.

I dont know,65 will be nice .And a suggestion add more contrast to your model if its possible. _________________ Lost Relic[mod] Lost Relic[game] QUICK_EDIT
The master copy would be the 3D model itself, not just a larger version of the gfx. The final release version should require as little work as possible on the modders end. QUICK_EDIT
Are you oldbies gonna start modding again with your years of experience or are you here to see your legacies in the communities(or both...)? _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT

The last thing to the modern GI (with 2 other versions).
I remade idle anims a bit (1st: look somewhere up, 2nd reading a letter without flies around). That cameo has been made by Sydro from Generals one.
