I have a similar processor (E6550 from 2.33 to 3.01) and same graphics card as you, 2GB of RAM, only one screen and 360GB of HDD space (I should have another 500GB but it's broken and needs sending back to WD). £450 well-spent if you ask me, that's everything (XP license too) except a monitor. _________________

Let's see.
Custom built gaming rig.
CPU: Core Duo 2 6600 2.4 OCd to 3.4 (runs low 30s idle/high 40s under load)
RAM: 4 gigs OCZ Platinum Series DDR2 ram (4 sticks/1 gig each)
MB: EVGA nForce 680i SE sli motherboard.
VIDEO: BFG Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS OC w/320mb GDDR3 ram PCIE
PSU: CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 750W
CPU COOLER: Thermaltake Silent 775D
HD: 2 300/250gb
DVD: Sony Dual Layer DVD burner
EXTRAS: Cooler Master Musketeer (thermal monitoring device + the retro style is cool looking)
CASE: AeroCool ExtremeEngine 3T (1 250mm, 1 140mm intake fans & 2 80mm outake fans)
KEYBOARD: Saitek Eclipse II keyboard
GAMEPAD: Alienware PS2 style gamepad
GAMEPAD:Cyber Snipa keyboard gamepad
MOUSE: Logitech G9 Laser
MOUSEPAD: Razer eXactMat
SOUNDS: Sony speaker system
MONITOR: Samsung SyncMaster 22" wide-LCD
OS: Dual Boot System XP Pro/Vista Ultimate
I bought everything (case/monitor/keyboard/ etc.) with the goal of building a system that matched as well as performed well. So picture the complete system in black/silver w/blue leds. And when I say match, I mean it. The gamepads, speakers, keyboard, monitor, all are black/silver with built in blue leds.
Anyway, not the best gaming system one could build, but it gets the job done. I shopped around for the best prices at the time, most came from Newegg.com. Excellent place by the way. Total price around 1700.
PS: I actually bought a Tuniq Tower 120 for my cpu cooling but it won't work in the ExtremeEngine 3T case. When mounted, the cooling fins touch and almost completely cover the PSUs internal vent. Which probably could have created a overheating problem on the PSU. So I went with a lower profile cooler like the Thermaltake 775D. Based on my temps, it works exceptionally well.
Cheers,

@ Tartan:
If I were you, I would go for a quad core. The intel Q6600 or the Xeno 2,4ghz (about the same price)(the xeno is suposed to be very overclockable;))
For motherboard I'd have a look at asus. Overclocking-settings, many things to look at, some even have iduvidual control of north- and southbridge!
For hdd's use WesternDigital ONLY!!! The extra dollar or two gives you a 20 times more reliable disk. And go for a 750 if giggs per $ is the most important.
The case is fine, however, it has no fan to blow in where the GPU would go that will make it harder to keep cold, unless you have some liquid nitrogen laying around
And the GPU: Go for the 9800GTX! not the 8900gx2
Half the price, but almost the same power. The best for the buck ATM
About the ram, go for either 2 or 4 sticks. All new ram suports "dual mod", wich make it run twice as fast. but it can only work if you have 2,4,6,8 or 10 (and the list keep going) sticks of ram. Just remember you need a x64 OS if you plan to have a TOTAL amount of memery beyond 4GB (RAM+GPU).

not for too long. planning to build a Nehalem system with a 9900GX2 and either 6 or 12GB of DDR3, depending on the prices at the time. looking at prices now, 12GB isnt unlikely. (it would now cost aroun 1000$, for 12GB 1600Mhz. I expect that to decrease by 50%) _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT

Everything I've read had the 6600 with the most stable/overclocking ratio. Most bang for your buck so to speak. So if your looking to save money vs highest speed attainable, go for it. Quad cores are nothing to turn your nose up at but currently you wouldn't get the most performance that they are capable of.
For RAM, look to "performance kits". I got 4 sticks for a few dollars more than 2-3 would have been. While current windows doesn't use the full potential of 4 gigs, you'd have an extra stick if you ever need it. I use all four tho.
I use Western Digital... I've had to replace alot of other brands for other people and they seem the most dependable.
Motherboard. ASUS is solid but I went with the EVGA because it uses Nvidia chipsets, which got very good reviews and work well with my Nvidia video card.
Alienware is a good gaming computer, but you can build an even better one for the price and you'll know what went in it & how it's made.
Look, this is the best advice anyone could give you, whatever hardware you are interested in, google for reviews in tech forums, overclocker forums, etc.! Find out how it compares. Read reviews of motherboards, cpus, ram, vidoe cards, etc. Don't go just by the brand name and assume because an earlier model was great, the newest is too. Go to newegg.com, read the buyer comments on any specific equipment you are interested in. Doesn't mean you have to buy it there, but if anything is bad or good about a certain piece of hardware, someone will have written about it.

I have the E6600, and it's quite fast. I could clock it up to 3.2ghz stable on the stock fan! However, if you want a computer to last more than two years, go for a quad. there is not that much price difference, but the preforman is much greater. And with the next windows, windows 7, the usage of a quad might be very well optimised if not, it can without a problem run a little complier, a game and musik and and and...!!! But when it all comes down til it, you have to chose. multicore-cpu's are in the comming, and you don't want to be the last on earth with a dual?? A good idea, buy a quad some days after the 8cores come out, it will drop quad prices in half _________________ This is a signature QUICK_EDIT

Two of the four WD drives I've owned have failed on me, granted they were both external.
Oh, and currently there's really no point in getting more than two cores in a processor. There really isn't much that is optimised well for more than one processor and it relies on the program to be coded specifically for multiple cores, not just the OS. Games will probably start but right now they'll just split the work (i.e. dedicated one processor for the AI and physics whilst using the other one for everything else).
I bought the E6550 processor and it was very cheap and still had the massive overclocking potential. In fact, it's now from 2.33 to 3.1 and still stable. I think it could get to about 3.4 with no problems and I might try seeing just how high it'll go. However, the Q6600 seems to be very cheap for what it is (it's £150 while the E6550 is £108) but I have no idea of its overclocking abilities.. _________________

Brian, Do you know how much I spent on mine so far?
On my old rig, combined with upkeep, repairs, and replacement parts, i've spent about 900USD over the past 3 years..
The new one I've spent right at 250, and the video card and HDD will only cost me another 200... so that's 450USD on the NEW rig... the RAM, DVD drives, Floppy, slave drives, and all that good stuff will be transferred over from my old rig.
A total of 1350 over a period of 3 years... That breaks down to 37.50 USD per month.... My cell phone bill is double that.. _________________ "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there." -Adam Young QUICK_EDIT

You'd be surprised at how much a simple thousand dollars gets you. Unless somehow that's not a pathetic amount to you, or you have some uber monster rig with an unnecessary amount of power.

It's not called pathetic, thats suchy a mean word. It's called enthusiastic! Some people use $40k on a stereo. Some use 1,5 billion on boats. It's a matter of interests, and how much interest your bank-account has _________________ This is a signature QUICK_EDIT
