YR in 3D? It's a possibility...
Subject description: At least it is bringing some interesting screenshots...
The Command & Conquer franchise has been one of the most modded RTS games in history, specially when Tiberian Sun came into the scene, allowing players to create their new units without replacing civilians or other units. Due to the tight schedule that existed in the production of these games, the development team who worked on them have only done the enough (and not much more than that) to allow designers to create the units that would be featured in these games.
These limits annoys modders and some of them try to expand this frontier by recreating these game engines from scratch. I've personally seen many of them like Free CnC and even hosted few here, like OpenSun and Open Tiberian Sun (amazing creativity from those who named these projects, heh?). I have yet to see one that is released, due to the absurd amount of work required to finish an engine like that, specially when the author decides to make it in 3D.
The latest indie engine spotted is the Ra2 Reload, which is being created by the forum member YuriX. As the name says, it tries to recreate Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. At the current development stage, this engine already brings the look of the game into it. The engine uses 3D geometry for everything, although it reads SHP files, which are not recommended by the author. The author is also creating a tool that converts voxels into models, but he wasn't successfull so far with that. TMP files are not supported and the terrain needs to be modeled from scratch. He has also got a map converter that makes some nice conversions from .yrm and .map files to the format used on his engine.
And here's some screenshots. The terrain is a work in progress and the ones that were not done yet are being showed in white. The modelled ones are already looking quite interesting.
The user interface is not completed yet, the radar will still be done and it will support multiples factions.
This engine will also support a plugin system which will allow you to add or replace features from it using higher level languages using .Net languages such as C#.
The 3D graphics will use a new .mesh format. MIX files for archives are still supported, although you might be able to use others (i.e.: ZIP) as long as you add a plugin to read them.
And there is a lot to be done. You can read more about it HERE. QUICK_EDIT

If it will suport full code of *ini files, it would be great. It would be also nice if NPatch things will be supported. _________________
Don't blame the others if you haven't checked your own (in)ability in the first case. QUICK_EDIT
I'd imagine it can support better things that NPatch because it's completely new code rather than modifying someone else's code. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

If it ever gets finished... making a graphical engine is one thing; actually implementing all base constructing, unit, weapon, scripting and AI posibilities of the original is quite a lot more work. I've seen quite a lot of engine remake projects come and go, 3D or not. _________________ QUICK_EDIT
PPM is not a place for racists. So, refrain from saying 'my PPM'.
Banshee, a joke, a very common meme, in fact. That being an image saying "caterpillars. In MY VAGINA?" _________________ Micro TS
