Spawners are units too!
I just discovered that if you apply a greater GuardRange to a Spawner=yes type unit, it behaves incredibly aggressively compared to normal non-Spawner units.
Then again, the units I have that are Spawner=yes do have incredible ranges.
So in essence, ModEnc/The Guide was right. Sight/GuardRange do influence targeting. Sight for obvious reasons, and GuardRange for the actual aggressive scanning.
